Pull off the hose from the turbo to the crossover pipe that goes across the radiator support and check for lots of oil coming out (that is if you can get to it)... sucks that you are far away from home! While the pipe is off at the turbo check the wheel for play in the shaft.

I took my new spark plugs out which were all wet and carbon caked and there was a lot of oil inside the combustion chamber, the pistons looked slimey. I put a quart of oil in and that topped it off. I started it up and let it run for about 5 minutes and the oil level went below half. I don't hear the turbo spooling when I rev it. It's running extra crappy, as if it were misfiring. Hard to believe that seal being bad could make it lose a half quart of oil in 5 mins. No external leaks visible... Exhaust tips are black.

I'll have to have the car towed tomorrow to my uncles place (heated garage, it's currently -12 here) I see there are rebuild kits for 30 bucks around the internet... A new Borg Warner K04 is running 1000 on ebay. Should I rebuild this one or replace it? I was hoping I could limp along until summer....

It's weird, I was driving and the boost was kind of stuttering then I parked to take a call for about 20 minutes, then as soon as I set off BAM misfiring, a sea of white smoke behind me and check engine flashing. I was just lucky I was near a nice gas station where it was warm.

So rebuild or new turbo... I imagine the impellers are shot...

Your intercooler and piping will hold all the oil.... be careful when you remove them or you will be covered in oil! If it has indeed blown and taken out the impellers you should look at replacing the unit.

Should I remove all the piping and inter cooler and clean it out? How can I get all the oil out of the cylinders?

Got the turbo off, hardest part was getting the middle banjo connection and the firkin oil return line off. OMG. The intake side was knurled over on the tips and the exhaust side had a wee chunk missing from just 1 of the blades. The lower intercooler hose had about a half quart of oil in it. Turbo seal blown? The exhaust had wet sticky oil coating the inside of it, the actual turbo did not have oil seeping from it. Well now searching for a deal on a K04, whats a god deal? Any advice on cleaning out the cylinders? I looked down inside the spark plugs and it was goopy looking. Should I fill the cylinders and soak them in diesel? Tomorrow I'll remove the rest of the piping and take da inna coola out and drain it, spoze it's full oil as well.

I had to bend the bracket out of the way as well, when I attempted to unscrew the firkin Allen screw holding it to the block it rounded almost immediately. So I bent it down out of the way. I'll use a jack to bend it back later. My uncle has this K&W Knock'er Loose super penetrating lubricant and it' a miracle in a can. If you can get some use it! All my manifold and exhaust bolts came right off no fuss with conventional wrenches.

If it was running well before, the cylinders should clean themselves out when you restart it with the new turbo installed.

Thanks for the replies. What if I did the diesel things any way? I've got a week to let it sit, I don't want to crust up the new plugs and turbo. Just wondering how I could extract it, probably use a small vacuum pump.

A new K04 is going to cost 1050 in my search unless I get a used one from car-part.com Which I don't want to do. I'm looking at other turbo's http://www.supremepowerparts.com/2/1..._category.html

Perhaps for not too much more money I can make more power? Is there a step up from ko4?
