    3.0T supercharger ticking

    Hi guys,

I'm about to buy my first Audi, an A7 S line 3.0T with all the bells and whistles and I hope you can help me with a question or two.

I went to a car dealer and he had a 2012 A7 thats still under warranty till October this year. When i turned on the car there were two things that caught my attention.

    1) the trunk would not open from the remote or the trunk release button above the license plate but it opened just fine from the button located on the door. The salesman told me wasn't honestly sure, could be an MMI setting and i could get it looked at as its under warrenty.

    2) This is what i'm really worried about, after starting the engine I noticed it produced a subtle ticking sound from the engine. Salesman told me its the supercharger and i shouldn't worry as thats how it sounds.

What do you guys think? also are the soft close doors as sensitive and prone to fault like the ones on BMW's?

    Thank for any help

Right abt supercharger sound. But don't get it, if there is obvious problems with it. Stay away!! Rule #1 Don't bring trouble upon yourself!

Can't answer about the supercharger but does the car have the "valet" setting like the B8 S4? I had the same problem with the trunk not working on the remote or with the release above the license plate but working from the button inside. I had accidentally hit the "valet mode" button located in the glove compartment which disables the remote and license plate button operation of the trunk.

There should be no discerning sound from the supercharger when car is idling. I had an a7 and you couldn't tell the difference.

It could be the fuel injectors making the ticking noise. Every Audi I've owned (four) has made this sound. Have a listen to another one to see if it has a similar sound.

Its not the fuel injectors, they really dont make any noise at all. The ticking you hear on German engines is typically known as "valve tick". These are the hydraulic lifters and they can make a louder tick if the oil gets a little low. Adding half a quart usually helps make it go away.

For me, the jury is out on this. When I heard ticking for the first time on my B5S4, I was certain it was the valves. I don't recall who told me or convinced me of it, but I was told that it was the injectors making this noise. An internet search will turn up lots of discussion about ticking sounds, and when the ticking is deemed "normal", folks always say it's the fuel injectors.

All four Audis I've owned have made this noise, regardless of age or oil level, so I'm inclined to believe what I'm hearing are the fuel injectors. I suppose a good test would be to open the oil fill cap to see if the noise gets appreciably louder. If it does, then it may very well be the valves.

I get what youre saying but theres no moving parts in a fuel injector. It goes "spray" lol. If you are hearing ticks from a fuel injector, you have way bigger problems...

Direct Injection/*High pressure* Fuel Injectors are most likely the ticking you are hearing.

my b7 a4 made the same noise... it almost sounded like a diesel at idle. from my understanding, direct injection is responsible for this noise at idle

Was the car running when you tried to open the trunk? I haven't checked the settings on my car, but when it's running it will only open from the button in the door. My valet button is not on.

Its the GDI injectors, not the SC. The sale person just does not know

And injectors certainly do have moving parts. The pintle opens and closes for every pulse
