Exact tasks done in Stage 1 and Stage 2 oil consumption fix?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello All,

Does anyone know what the exact tasks that are done during a stage 1 and stage 2 oil consumption test/fix is? I bought my Audi from a BMW dealer (it was traded in) and as part of the post-sale 2 month warranty they'd like to fix my car but not by sending it to Audi but by doing it themselves. Not too sure if its a good idea getting a BMW shop to take care of an Audi but I'd like to "test" them to see what they will be doing vs what Audi would do and see if they would do the exact same steps.

    Thanks!

This is Phase 2 (May involve more depending on what they see when they get in there i.e rods, head, entire short block...):

Phase 1 is PCV, Crank Seal(s), Harmonic Balancer (sometimes) and some reprogramming and weighing of oil to confirm usage. More or less, differs by case.

I did a search and have a notepad going of what people said they have had done but there doesn't seem to be en exact list of tasks. This is what I see has been done but some didn't while other had a lot more:

    pressure regulating valve
    crank seal
    separator (what's that?)
    Software update
    breather
cleaned the cylinder head cover & upper and lower oil pan

What's the official task list? Isn't thew TSB posted somewhere?

That looks like what they told me they will do for my Stage I this week.

PCV is not a "pressure regulating valve".

It is Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve. Its job is to purge the motor with fresh air, and re-introduce blow by and unburned gasses into the combustion chamber to be burned off.

The pressure regulating valve is an entirely different valve.

So then both need to be replaced?

Take it to an Audi dealer and have them pull up the history on the car. They may very well handle it themselves. I had stage 2 and am the 3rd owner and was way out of warranty.

Unfortunately, terminology isn't always used in the best of ways. People hear things and repeat them sideways. For example one guy might say "crank vent" while the other says his "pressure regulating valve" and the next talks about "the breather" or a "separator". In the end, they all mean to be referencing the bloody PCV. And BTW, the PCV on our CAEB engines is not the type you found on your mom's 78 Gremlin! And think of the word Positive as a vector rather than a "+"... in a sense that any crankcase pressure strong enough to overcome the valving is returned to the intake plenum while below atmospheric (no boost).

You're looking at most probably a very expensive piston replace (at a minimum assuming no other issues found during the replace). So consider taking it to Audi and first figuring out the history (maybe Stage 1 has been performed) and then getting a detailed write up of what needs to be performed for the required analysis and stage 1 (assuming not yet done) that BMW can't possibly have the insight on. Then bring it to the BMW dealer, to the GM, not your sales person or their service people and talk it through with them. Get them to commit to the potential for a full service through stage 2. Bring a friend. Consider paying for the 1,000km analysis at Audi for further documentation. You only have 2 months and by just saying you burn a lot of oil, you have no basis to defend a warranty claim without documentation. Otherwise you're relying on a sales guy or service guy to pay for your engine rebuild. Are you comfortable with that? What if BMW does a stage 1 repair, but the problems are the pistons and then you're out of your 2 month warranty? You need to assume that your pistons need to be replaced.

I get where you're coming from but is there not a HUGE STICKY at the top of the page?

I mean literally everything pertaining to this very subject. That entire thread is "advice, thoughts, collaborations".

Yes.....but for us Canadian's I felt as though there were three stages as opposed to the US two stage when I had mine done. For me, stage 1 was the was the crank case seal and reflash of the software. That failed when I came in for stage 2 which was the weighing of the oil left after driving 1000kms. once my car failed stage 2 (I still went through a litre of oil in 900kms) they lobbied with Audi of Canada to do the piston/ring replacement (stage 3)as "Good Will"....they agreed and they did the job at no cost. They also did a carbon cleaning which, I think, made a huge difference. I had 146,000 kms on the car when they did the replacement. Since then I haven't lost an ounce of oil.
So I think there may be some confusion as to what steps are taken and at what point. Just my $.02

I got mine done in Oakville fyi.
The procedures are the same in US and Canada... sometimes stage 1 and 2 are combined... they replaced the seal and reflashed the software on my first trip AND did the oil weigh-in + told me to come back after 1000 km.
Then on my 2nd visit (presumably stage 2), they saw that it failed and took my car for pistons replacement.
