Stage 1 and 2 APR tune on the 3.0T engine - your impression?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hi all! I have an A6 3.0T Avant and am seriously considering tuning the engine. I know the numbers are slightly different with the A6 vs the S4, but I was hoping to those that have tuned their car, what impressions they had? Are you pleased?

How much faster did the car feel 30-50, 50-70, i.e., passing situations with just stage 1? What about stage 2?

Was stage 2 (supercharger pulley upgrade) worth it?

How is gas mileage after tuning the engine?

    Thanks!

This has been asked many times.

Go straight to Stage 2/pulley. It is much faster than stock throughout the entire powerband.

Gas mileage under hard driving will be worse. Under normal conditions it is the same.

    You will love it.

But you have to run 93, yes? And if 93 isn't available to you reliably...

Anyone who's scraped the surface of tuning knows by now that doesn't work. You can flash it back to stock but they will see that there was something altered in the ECU and that will throw a TD1 just as if it were brought in tuned.

Then how can someone like APR claim that they do a full flash to stock (OEM binary) while keeping the flash counter static? I don't know. I've heard of cases where this worked and cases where it didn't (with cases that it wasn't even the tune that gave them TD1).

I was under the impression, from what I read, that no tuners can access that counter making it impossible to reset it to make it look like nothing ever changed..

seems like the only real worries are the DSG and SportDiff having a problem and not getting this covered under warranty. its a gamble for sure, but the odds are with you.

Again, there have been no confirmed cases on here that I've seen where someone flashed back to their stock file and was still automatically flagged TD1 by the Audi computer. The flash counter is reset to whatever it was when you were first flashed when you flash back to stock.

I knew about the DSG issues, but what sportsdiff issues? I thought the leak was MY2011 and back?

I had my APR flash removed for a dealer visit that involved a software update and no TD1. Regardless I'm chancing my warranty but car has been solid so far.

The DSG issue was supposed to be 2011 and 2010, but a few 2012 DSGs popped up with the same issue. Havn't seen any 2012's with sportdiff leaks, but I wouldn't count it out just yet unless someone knows the specifics here.

Edit: looks like a 2013 just had problems:

Gulp. I was hoping to dodge the diff issue. Maybe I should hold off on the pulley.

When you flash back to the stock file, is that something you can do yourself or do you take into an APR dealer to flash back and return to him after your dealer visit? If so, how much do these services cost?

You have to take it back to an APR dealer unless you have friends in high places:) Now that direct port programming is available, you no longer have to pull the ECU to flash to chipped mode. Shouldn't take longer than 15-20 minutes to flash back to stock or chipped mode.

You have to visit your APR dealer. Our local dealer is cool and doesn't charge labor if you have to get flashed back to stock for warranty work. But most will probably charge $50 or so.

Does the shop charge labor for doing stage 2/pulley upgrade, or is it included in the price of the APR pulley + installation kit?

They charge labor, it's not hard to do but they charge a crazy amount for the tool so it's almost as cheap to just pay them

Won't dealerships flag TD1 when they see the pulley? Any technician can clearly tell the difference between stock and the smaller pulley.

Hmm good question! I guess it plays into factor how "cool" the service dept. is ... find one, build that relationship, they can help you out.

Most technicians won't manually flag your car TD1. That's not to say it's impossible for it to happen, but generally they are cool about mods- it's the automatic ECU scanning that gets most people.

It looks the same as the stock pulley and the only way to tell the difference would be to get a micrometer and measure it.

That's what I'm hoping for. The service people at my dealership seem very mod friendly, always trying to get me to do the stasis tune. Probably jumping to stage 2 APR this spring, no point in wasting time with stage 1.
