I'm test driving a new AllRoad

2011 B8 S4 at the dealer to see why the engine light came on, and I asked them to let me take a new allroad as a loaner.

I am an avant fan. I had a b5 avant before the S4 and a little part of me died when I had to go to the sedan. Couple years on in the S4 and I am really missing the avant.

First impressions on the drive from the dealership to my office is that it is fine for 90% of the driving I do. I will miss the big hammer when I want to us it, but as far as S4 owners go I probably use it very little. I thought the ride quality was nice too, firmer than I was expecting but it definitely starts to roll under moderate cornering. If I squint I don't know if I could tell the interior apart. The S4 is nicer, but I don't think it'd take me long to forget what was different.

One thing hanging me up right now are the horrible wheels. I hate the wheels on this thing. I've seen real nice aftermarket wheels on some lowered allroads, but was wondering what's a real attractive offering if you want to keep the stock ride height and tire size. Any suggestions?

Doesn't the allroad have higher stock ride height than the b8 avant? That car would be awesome with some coils (springs would prob be too far for stock shocks if going for 1 finger type wheel gap) and EC suspension pieces. Then some nice 19" wheels and flash from APR, exhaust. Would probably get you close to B8 S4 stock type power, maybe not low-end torque though. Only people that wouldn't work for are ones who keep ECU's stock, want Stg 2 power from the S4 or want 6MT.

If you don't utilize the S4's perfromance, you might as well be in an A4 or an Allroad.

If you got an Allroad you could use basically any OEM Audi wheel, 18s, 19s, etc and pair it with the proper tire size.

I was thinking about that. I have my stock 19" peelers, those might look nice with a beefier tire.

wouldn't you need like 25mm spacers all the way around because of the allroad fender flares? im not sure what stock ET is on allroad wheels

It is, might as well buy a Q5 /w the 3.0T in some flavor

Both the allroad and the (S)Q5 need adjustable height along with the adaptive suspension. The Allroad needs the supercharged 6.

The flat seats were enough for me to pass. However, a slammed and modded All-Road is better looking than a S-Line in IMO. Get the seats re-done and a chip and some crazy concave wheels and you are set!

Generally is unacceptable, yes. But some may elect the "any port in a storm" philosophy.

^ As I have suggested previously, this philosophy seems to validate Audi's strategy of not importing an Avant. If those most enthused by the Avant will accept a CUV/SUV (including an AllRoad), hard to believe Audi would ever consider bringing an Avant back. I'll stop there...

Final Update. The dealer had to keep my car for the week so I had a lot of time with the allroad. I am disappointed to say that I liked it less and less everyday: the steering, throttle, suspension, transmission... even those stupid plastic fenders bothered me more and more everyday. Then the kicker... when I got back in my S4 I was blown away with how much better it felt before I even hit the start button. Once I did I was reminded about all the other things....

I dunno, I have an Allroad too (well the gf has it) and I really love it. Looks great when tastefully modded. No it does not have the performance of an S, but its a pretty great car in my opinion and I would be quite happy driving it as my only car.
