    Trying to track this misfire...

Alright so I bought my xplus Giac tuned S4 about a year ago and every once in a while it would misfire at high rpm. I replaced the plugs with Denso iridium's and it seemed fine but would still occasionally misfire. About two months ago I was trying to figure out how to trace this misfire and I said fuck it Ill wait until it throws a code. Literally ten minutes after it threw the codes for Random/multiple misfire and cylinder 4 misfire. The next morning I swapped the coil pack from 4 to 5 and it was fine for about a month and now it started doing it again only it will not throw the code! Is there anything else I can do or just wait for it to throw the code again!? I want to do the 2.0 coil conversion but I just dropped to much money on coilovers and wheels...... Maybe this summer. So for now I need to figure this out...

Good luck man, I've been trying to figure out my misfire on cylinder 4-5-6 and no luck so I gave up. I tried pretty much everything

Yeah man its such a bummer! All my buddies wanna race but I have to tell them no cause I'm trying to track this misfire... I luckily haven't really dropped money on it besides plugs but if I don't throw a code within the next few months and it doesn't go away I'll be purchasing the 2.0 conversion

I have a P0300 code for random multiple cylinder misfire but I'm not getting a specific cylinder. I hear our ICMs are a common failure. Maybe you can start there..

I was able to do this diy conversion http://audisrs.com/ftopic43267-0-asc-105.php for under $225, might be worth checking out.

Did you use plug n play or did you have to wire it up yourself? Wiring up stuff just makes me nervous.. I'd rather spend the extra money for 034's plug n play! But like I said, no cash for anything like that as of now! looks like I have to wait on downpipes!

If you have access to VAGCOM or a scantool, you can observe MVB 14, 15 and 16 in the Engine control module. With this, you can see if the misfire is stationary on one cylinder or moving around. Yes, it is common for the Output stages to fail on these cars too.

I bought these plugs http://www.ebay.com/itm/151113693949...84.m1497.l2649 just have to splice 4 wires on each connector, no soldering needed. Bought icm deletes prewired for $27 shipped.

Does that require cutting any of the stock harness? or does it plug into the stock

Lol! thats shitty man... My car idles fine and everything until high rpm and its only occasionally. Sometimes it will pull extremely smooth and then sometimes it will just start misfiring hard!

All of you need to check lifters, lobes and the harness for shorts.

If pressure test and coil/ICM swapping doesn't solve the issue then it is time for a leakdown and harness inspection. I'd do it in that order because I hate looking for shorts without the right equipment.

ICM Delete / Coil conversion is a great mod for healthy motors to replace ignition components that are prone to fail. It is not a fix for difficult to diagnose misfires.

Just get new coils already. Check if they have oil/burnt oil on them as well as plugs

honestly could be 02/egt sensor related. the whole ignition/air sensor system on this car is WAY too complicated for its own good. and parts fail intermittently, and the computer doesn't know what's what.

if it's a minor issue, live with it. if it's bugging you, find a buddy and swap parts with him.

What James said. My car did this for a while and didn't stop until I swapped out my EGT's. I haven't had the problem since. Coil packs, plugs and ICM didn't help.

    Good luck!

6 new coil packs helped my misfire issue, car also didn't throw a code probably because there were multiple cylinders misfiring, some of my coils were even cracked

Thanks for the input guys! Yesterday I ripped on her a little bit and zero misses so I'll just wait until I get a consistent misfire or until it decides to throw the code again before I start replacing expensive parts....

It is hilarious that whenever I try to look into this misfire my car decides to throw a code when I'm about to say fuck it again! Originally it was throwing random/multiple misfire and cyl 4. I swapped the coilpack with cyl 5 and now two months later I'm finally throwing a code for cylinder 5! Going to pick up a coilpack after class!

I tracked an idle misfire for what seems like forever. Then my fuel pump went out, replaced it and misfires went away....

Replace them all, then you'll never have to worry about coilpacks again

if its a fuel pump issue.. are there symptoms to see on vcds that it in fact are causing issues ? am i right in thinking she'll go lean or rich depending on how the pump takes a dump?

I don't believe there is anyway to diagnose low fuel pressure in vcds.

I'm piecing together a 2.0 coil conversion within the next two months so when it gets nicer out I'll be ready! But I got a coilpack from a buddy for twenty dollars brand new and she pulls awesome!
