How about moving to North Carolina?

So most of you have seen my "Moving to Florida" thread...I'm sure there are nice places there but it's no longer a front-runner for a potential landing spot. I haven't ruled it out, but overall, it's just sounds like it might not be the place for my family.

That brings up the next possible destination, North Carolina...specifically, Cary (Raleigh) or Charlotte. One of my main reasons for moving was weather and although they still do have "winter" in NC, it's not as long and extreme as in MD. I've lived in MD almost all of my life (Lived in Parsippany NJ from 1981-87) and have always hated the winters here. I've simply "had it" and need to move to a more temperate climate. As I mentioned in my Florida thread, I love the hot weather but my family is not as fond of it as I am. So, NC seems to be the perfect mix of city, plus affordable simple living and a good climate. I've talked to some people who left my town to live there, and they love it. I've also spoken to a few natives of Charlotte who now live in my town, and they love it and actually want to LEAVE and go back lol. Yea, my town has some issues haha.

I know a few of you are from NC or at least live there now, so let me know what you guys think of it. I work in the healthcare industry, specifically IT, privacy and security, so hopefully there's a decent market for that kind of career down there.
The harder I practice, the luckier I get.

How about moving to North Carolina?

    Have you considered Richmond, VA?

It's VERY similar to Raleigh and since you're in the healthcare IT/Security profession, Richmond has been known to be a growing place for that.

I've only visited NC. The biggest unpleasantries I remember from my trips were the horseflys and crappy-prickly crabgrass.

(From NJ) I've looked into NC a little as well. Between there and where I am now in Northern VA, the salary is around the same, yet the cost of living is almost 40% cheaper. There's nothing special about this area that would keep me from going to an up an coming city in NC, aside from all of my friends being in this area. Money just goes further there. However, the main downfall I have heard is that the North Carolina school system is atrocious, and gets no funding (GF is a teacher), but I have not actually looked into that; just what I've heard.

ill stat by saying, I live in nc, I was born here, raised here, been here for a long time, know almost everypart of the state and have live a few other places to compare.

IMO, Raleigh area would be your best bet, I like the rural areas, so Farrington area would be a great place to look of you like that. try and stay away from cary, overpriced, horrible traffic, bored ass police, and hoa's everywhere...

your profession is well covered it this state, with the RTP, the triangle, triad, and Charlotte being the financial capitol, just lots of commerce in general, not to mention lots of private contract work and gov posistions. largest marine corps base(personnel), largest army base(land area, 2nd in personnel), and hq for jasoc.

if your from the north, you may never leave. the humidity sucks in the summer, but its worth it for the rest of the year. yhis has been one of the worst winters weve had in 10 years, it snowed twice, 8 inches was the most we got here, it was gone in a couple days. one of your largest complaints will be that your kids will stay home if someone talks about it snowing the next day. this inst new york, we drive slower and with respect to other motorist, deal with it. and yes, education isnt the best, but it isnt the worst, and its getting better. plus our governor takes cookies to protestors! we also have the most linear road milage of any state, I.e. lots of places to drive, from Raleigh, your roughly 3 hours to the beach, or the mountains, your choice, and if you play golf, we have the best, and most, period. an NFL team in Charlotte, NHL in Raleigh, and the state is a mecca for minor leage baseball.

    All sounds good to me!

I love the heat and humidity, so no worries on my end. My wife and I are from DC so we're pretty used to the "swampiness" in the summer. She's not fond of the heat but this is her compromise to Florida lol. I'm good with "Driving slow". That's one thing I didn't miss about DC. It's like freaking MAD MAX daily on the beltway. People are nuts. To be honest, our time with our children flies by so fast so I hope I can take those "snow" days and cherish them (ya, I know it sounds gay lol).

I had heard a lot of good things about Cary, but also some of the stuff you mentioned.

UNFORTUNATELY, I'm a Redskins fan. I have to take that "fandom" to the grave with me lol. So I guess I'll need Sunday ticket haha. I actually used to be a denfese contractor and have retained my credentials so that's another industry to consider.

Thanks for the input, keep it coming!

BTW - Nov. of this year will be my 10th year on AZ. I haven't had an audi since 2007. Pretty sure I'll never leave this place lol.

I love NC. I have one Aunt in Cary and one Aunt in Mooresville (just north of Charlotte). I love the Charlotte area and pitch my wife 2-3 times a week on moving down there. We visited family last month and finally i got her to look at houses. I gave her a five year plan on moving down and i think she is actually considering it knowing how much cheaper it is to live there as well as how beautiful it is down there.

You cant go wrong with either. My Aunt has lived in Cary since i was born and loves it. I like Charlotte more because of Lake Norman (where we were looking at property plus i work in finance). Hopefully we can meet up at some meets down there in a few years.

I have now lived in Nc for about 18 years now (moved here from Ct) Its ok I say ok because i still love winter and the snow that comes with it.. The cost of living is cheap There is land up by me selling for 38k for a 10 acre plot. Where I live there are tons of back country road that i can open the car on so that helps me survive down here..

There are plenty of IT jobs in both the Triad region (High Point, Greensboro & Winston Salem) and in the Raleigh/Durham region and me and the wife live in the middle area giving us both acceaa to both areas if that helps.
