Ok folks, I've searched about the RS4 engine into an S4 threads, and know that it's obviously cheaper to purchase an RS4 than the S4, BUUUUT

There's no RS4 Wagons that were brought across the pond, SO how much would it be for the 4.2 FSI swap?

Coming from an LS1 Camaro, I happen to like V8s, so the Turbo swaps don't interest me in the slightest nor do any of the B8 and beyond Audis with the non-V8 engines.

I did my research on picking up my B7 S4 Avant (Sprint Blue, 3 pedals) and plan to keep it for a very Very VERY long time, how much, ballpark, would that kinda swap cost, better gearing and all?

Easiest on the wallet would probably be to purchase totaled RS4 and swap all of the drive-train and supporting electrical components. Then part out rest of the RS4 and whatever you took out of your S4.

out of curiosity what are you trying to achieve by replacing your BHF V8 with another V8?

It would probably be cheaper to sell what you got, take a trip, car shop, and import one.

    Or one of those maybe?

The CTS-V and Mighty Merc are larger than I like both in exterior dimensions and vehicles size(don't forget I live in SF and parallel park) , plus they're RWD only, and even if they were AWD, it's not Audi or Subaru derived. I'm heading to Yosemite tomorrow morning and the wife and I will be car camping.

How difficult can it honestly be? Both B7 platform, take the 4.2 FSI out of a B7 RS4 sedan and put it in a B7 Avant.

I'm currently following a Suzuki Swift "24 hours of Lemons" build that's getting the A8 4.2 crammed in behind the drivers seat as a "Mid-Engine" build. Gonna be at VIR in August if any member here wanna see that crazy thing in person LOL

As Audi enthusiasts, it can't be harder than that, sure more expensive, but not harder.

OP, three questions for you so I can properly discuss this with you.

    1. What is wrong with your current motor? (Not being a d1ck, just looking for current issues and broken stuff)

    2. Is this a DD?

    3. What is your BUDGET? Your NO BS budget.

Nothing wrong at all with the current motor, needs a brake job soon, that's it.

I'm literally thinking out loud here, like, how has this not been done yet?

It's a DD sure, but were talking > 300 miles per month living in SF.

No BS? I'd have to think that such a thing could be completed under $20k

Anything could be done for the right PRICE. Honestly hasn't been done because thats exactly how far it gets... just people talking about doing it.

So does that mean you have $20K to do this?

    I've delved into this heavily.

There's a lot of modules that won't communicate.. you'd basically need an entire mostly working RS 4 to make this work, and swap those modules/wiring in.

It's a solid 25k of work. I've worked this all out already. Mechanically, it bolts right in.. but you need to think about this like the Subaru swaps. Same theoretic concept, same damn car, pretty much the same engine.. but it takes a colossal amount of work in the wiring/electronics. Frankly, these are not simple cars like a honda/subaru.. the brunt of the work is in the wiring and modules/coding. Plus.. that's unknown territory, meaning you'd have to be a guinea pig and say.. "Do it, charge me whatever"

I don't have that kind of budget this year.

I will say this.. if you have the patience, and can source a salvage RS 4, be my guest.. please post whatever you find.

Like i said.. I have all of those bits laying around, 28k on the whole setup if you'd like to buy it and try for yourself ;)

What are your goals? The only benefit I see from going with the FSI from the RS4 at this point is the fact that it can literally rev to the sky. If you just want more power, bring it to JHM. And if $20k is the budget you'll be kicking yourself for even thinking about putting a carbon building 4.2 into your car after JHM builds your motor.

^ what the Kookie monster said. Harith has been there and speaks from experience. Anything is possible, but for a DD, especially in SF, its just not worth it.

I could have a 4.2 FSI "RS4" Avant and be divorced

    OR

I could keep that cash for Hawaii in July and keep my wife happy

Why not spend that 20k toward a supercharged (10k) built motor (10k). You're even driving distance to JHM. With that 20k spent, you'll have a stage 2, 650chp (or thereabouts) motor that's even stronger than a stock RS4 motor (I.e. Will be able to handle up to 800chp or thereabout) minus the extra 1k rpm redline from the RS4.

Your thinking only nets you 420chp, mine nets you 650chp with room to grow to 750/800chp (stage 3).

    Just a thought. :)
