A true word of advice and I know it's gonna sound too simple. Check the exhaust pipes the dirtier they are the more consumption. Take a close look and to make sure they haven't been scrubbed. It's still difficult to completely scrub the build up off. Another tell tale sign even better is after you've test driven it, park with the engine still running open the door and give it some serious revs. Wait about 30 seconds to a minute between throttling. This has to be done in the proper wind and sunlight conditions. Bring a friend and have him/her watch the exhaust or you watch as he/she does the throttling. You will be able to black exhaust exiting the tailpipes literally. Even a little is bad. Keep trying the method and you'll get an idea HOW bad. And screw whatever salesperson gives you an attitude during this. Also, if you have access to a hand scanner bring it with you and use it. It'll be worth it totally. Some hand scanners take a bit of time and you might have to go through each control module to get any codes that might be stored. And do this after the drive because they can be erased daily by the dealer. Don't bring this up until the end of the test drive. Even better to have a girlfriend keep it in her purse. Act like you know what you're doing, learn how to use the scanner. You can buy one for less than 200 bucks from companies like ecstuning. Take any codes and go back home and Google them n come here with them. This will give you buying leverage and you'll get an idea of what you're getting into. If the salesman/seller objects move on. Their a ton of these cars being sold. Take your time! How do I know, cuz I've been through all this before. The method works. If you find a decent one chances are there's gonna be some work needed regardless. This'll help narrow things down!
