As far as I know, alternate routes are only displayed at the beginning right after you choose start route guidance. So, the only option known to me is to stop route guidance and start it again.

Or if you know the general area you are going, maybe take a wrong turn and it'll reroute? Sounds ass backwards, but a thought.

How do you get yours to re-route for traffic? I have yet to get mine to do this... it's awful.

You don't get it to re-route for traffic - it does it on it's own. You can't force it's hand. If the traffic is not updated in the system then it will not be aware of it and won't re-route. It also won't re-route if it still thinks it's the shortest route even with traffic. Many cities this will be the case. I've had mine re-route for traffic only a handful of times in 2 years.

Correct. In many dense areas unless there is a major wreck or something the reported traffic delay will most likely be less than the additional time it would take getting off the current route and take a detour. You also have to keep in mind that navigation systems never take back roads or residential streets except for the last stretch to reach the final destination, so any detour that it comes up with is mostly composed of freeways and major roads. I frequently get off the freeway on my short commute home, because I just don't like to creep in traffic, but it doesn't actually save any time. I'm basically just wasting my time at traffic lights and intersections and often it would have actually been faster to just stay on the freeway.
