Hey guys, I just changed drive belt and tensioner but still hearing something...wondering if any of you have heard it. It seems like it's becoming more frequent.

Hey everyone, I wanted to mention also that it's a 2008 b7 with a 2.0 engine....75k miles. Could it be the timing belt?

hey hugh, it sounds like the front of the engine but i'm not certain...i'm deaf in my left ear and my directional hearing is pretty awful. as i said i replaced the drive belt and tensioner two days ago and that didnt stop it.

I have the same noise but only in cold weather. It goes away once it warms up. I never looked into, maybe I should, but I never had any problems.

I can vouch the fact that his directional hearing is terrible.

So you started hearing this noise, changed the accessory belt and tensioner and the noise is still there.

Does this noise ever go away or is it constant? I would definitely take a look at your timing belt. It could be starting to come apart and it hitting something as the belt travels.

That's 100% right Jake, it's not going away. I'm not sure how to look at the timing belt but will read my Haynes manual and do some research here. I really hope it's not the timing belt.

You can take out some of the bolts holding the timing belt cover and slightly bend it out so it exposes the timing belt. Let the car idle and peak at the belt while it is rotating to check if you see anything abnormal. (be careful putting your fingers back there while it is running, I would suggest using a tool to pry it open)

I had that noise and it ended up being the timing belt/tensioner.

    Check out this thread: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...art-What-to-do

Mine (2007 w/63k) does it as well, when the engine is cold. Once the engine has warmed up a bit, the noise is no longer there. Looks like a few people have reported that a timing belt/tensioner/pulleys job solves the issue. I sure would like to know exactly what is causing the noise. I'd guess it's one of the timing belt pulley/rollers that is making the noise. Whether or not it means it needs to be replaced right away, or soon, or not something to worry about... I have no idea!

Let me know if you end up solving the noise mystery somehow.

I'm on the same exact boat as you. In spring/summer the noise doesn't happen whatsoever. I'm not sure if it's something to worry about or not since it's not constant.

Well after reading those other threads, and asking a mechanic friend to listen I'm now thinking it could be the water pump. This dude said the noise was coming from the back of the engine (which was news to me)

Not sure what to do, water pump, thermo and TB replacement at the dealer can be up to $2500

That sounds an awful lot like a tb tensioner.

Full tb service, including waterpump, will take care of it.

If it is indeed coming from the back, it will be something altogether different. Chain, adjuster and tensioner are back there

The bearing in the water pump impellar shaft, or what? I guess I'd rather it be water pump related rather than timing belt related...

Tell you the truth I dont know but when the autoshop I took it to showed me there was a leak. Im positive 100% that sound is the water pump though because that shit bothered the hell out of me too.

Water pump, belt tensionner, roller, timing belt, others. I have to take a look at it and fix it because it could become a big issue with your engine. Just fix it.
