PSA: P1388 - 6372 - Control Module Malfunction - DBW Throttle Monitoring – FIXED!

Background:

During the recent polar vortex and unusually cold weather, several customers reported encountering a ‘limp mode’ condition occasionally upon first starting their vehicle after sitting in the cold.

Condition:

Customers with this issue described the problem such that upon starting the vehicle and backing up, the EPC light would come on and the engine would bog. Restarting the engine would result in normal operation.

Fault Code:

Customers with this condition reported the following fault code:

P1388 - 6372 - Control Module Malfunction - DBW Throttle Monitoring

Example Threads:

• APR v2.2 occasionally going into limp mode
  
• EPC light comes on when going in reverse and car dies after shifting into first gear

The Fix:

Our engineering team was able to acquire a vehicle experiencing this issue and was able to duplicate the issue, identify what the issue was and resolve the issue. After several weeks of beta testing, customers running the updated software reported the issue was resolved.

How to get the update:

The process of updating the files is lengthy and not all ECU box codes exhibited the same behavior. As such, I will take requests and have engineering update files one by one as the requests come in. Eventually all files going forward will be updated. Please send me your vin ONLY if you’ve experienced this issue so we can update affected codes first, before updating the rest.

This is really good work. Admitting there was an issue and working to resolve it.

Some companies will try and make excuses, blame the customer, or flat out call you a liar.

While it might take more than one instance before anyone will admit there is an issue, I give extreme kudos to APR for tackling this issue and getting it resolved, along with communicating it to everyone instead of quietly fixing cars and trying to keep it hush hush.

I really respect a post like this, and although I have not always been keen on Arin's methods in the past, nothing but respect for this.

So far I only have records of this box code and these two revisions reporting the problem and I only received requests from 3 people: 8K0907551A S0001 & S0002. There may be more reporting the issue, but I only searched my inbox for vins / box codes. Point being, this seems extremely isolated. However, if you do experience it, there is now a public record of it. Anyone Googling the P-Code will find this thread and we'll fix it. Eventually it will make it into all codes, but the process is extremely lengthy and I don't anticipate doing it on anything other than a case by case basis at the moment.

Bitching will probably be that the result was to "identify what the issue was and resolve the issue" without actually providing any high level technical details.

That being said, in terms of customer service, kudos to Arin and APR on how you are handling the resolution and rollout of the fix to your customers. As someone currently evaluating stage II options I have been tracking this issue to see how things would turn out and it says a lot about your company. Great job APR.

It is new version so the dealer will be able to tell what version you have and if it is the current version or not.

I've had this issue for 2 years. finally enough people complained and they said they would work on it. then they say they fixed it and 2 weeks later I still don't have a file available. $2000 should be buying better response IMO.

If you've had the problem, I'd do it. If not, I wouldn't be in a big rush to get it.

Unless the dealer followed this thread, I'm sure they will not know about the update. However, they don't need to do much on their end. If they plug in and load our directport programming suite, and even select no options at all, they'll get these files, all of which are updated:

If you have a pulley, you want the pulley software.

If you've removed your catalyst and or have a high flow unit, you'll want a Testpipe file.

I was unaware you or others had this problem for 2 years. Internally we were confused why all of a sudden we were hearing about it this past winter, given the changes we made were in production for such a lengthy period of time on thousands of vehicles. I'm sorry we did not catch this earlier, but I'm pleased my guys were able to correctly identify what was causing it, and make the appropriate changes to make the ECU happy, rather than "patching" the problem, so to speak.

As for the timeline, when I announced this fix I stated the following: "The process of updating the files is lengthy and not all ECU box codes exhibited the same behavior." Since this process takes a while to update, and is resource heavy, I asked for people to contact us so we could go through the ECUs one by one updating them only if affected.

When we had the resources to finish all of them, we did.

But, I needed to field test a flash to make sure we didn't have any strange bugs during the program switching process. I finally had a customer able to test this last week and everything was confirmed to be working. Releasing without this testing, combined with program switching, and a weekend, may have caused panic and upset customers. I chose to wait for everything to be fully ready before letting our customers pick it up.

Alternatively, if I chose not to announce the fix, we would have accomplished less and it would have taken longer. I think the route I took was good.

He specifically asked people that had the issue to email him your VIN number and they would make a file to send to your dealer. I dont see what the problem is with that and then come back and release the file for all different ecu variations. Do you have proof that you emailed or contacted APR 2 years ago? Seems like some people are bitching about a problem but no one actually contacting APR about the problem until now.
