Just did mine yesterday. I broke about 8 or 9 tabs off that nylon ring, but with patience you can get it without using a new $36 USD ring. I probably spent a good 20 minutes with a chisel, moving around the ring till it was lose by hand. Saved another $33 USD by reusing the seal. I really appreciated this post:

I put that bottom hose on and it clicked. I felt it and heard it. I thought, "what's wrong with that jfo guy?" Then I gave it 3 hard pulls, it popped off on the 3rd pull. After the 2nd time I pulled it every which way, I couldn't pop it off. I have yet to put the back seat in....just because apparently I'm not as good as I'd like to think.

I didn't add it to my original post, but the hose popped off a third time. The connector clips were not broken, but obviously not holding as intended. That hose is quite stiff and wants to straighten out, pulling away from the housing nipple. I was stuck on the road away from home this time. I needed to get the car running while looking for a new part and wrapped a long zip tie around it to hold it in place. I couldn't find just the hose separate from the entire pump. The zip tie was quite secure so I left it in place. That was 4 years ago.

Hey all - I recently completed this job with the insights from this thread and as a matter of what I do on Youtube, I offer my DIY walkthrough for those coming after me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=273pW-sP39A

A nice benefit was that I calculated a 4.6% increase in fuel economy after I changed the filter. I carefully opened the original filter and took a close look at the element at the end of the video, but here's a preview.

I've replaced the filter this morning and will share some thoughts:

After hammering for 30mins and breaking many tabs I had made very little progress. I sat and realized that penetrating oil should seep into the threads and loosen things up. Sprayed it and waited 20mins, didn't really help. I then noticed the small holes that run all along the top of the nut. Started shooting penetrating oil in it. The voice of an old mechanic popped in my mind as he always told me that penetrating oil was crap and compared it to toilet paper. I fetched my oil can and started dripping oil into the holes and feeding it by stabbing it with a paper clip. Gave this 15 mins and with 2 taps it's started coming off with ease.

The filter is definitely worth replacing as a lot of black fuel and particles drained backwards out of the filter. SO DONT LET IT RUN BACK INTO THE TANK. I caught it with a small container.

The old tank gasket/seal looked in good condition. Personally I would not replace it if I had to do it again.

Same as with the nut, not necessary to replace it if not destroyed.

As mentioned before, remove the fuse for the fuel pump and run it until empty, remove the fuel cap and truthfully I had very little fuel mess. I used a little plastic container to catch the fuel escaping the fuel line from the top of the assembly.

That been said I'm happy to have replaced the filter, just pay attention to what's been posted before and it'll be a breeze. Job shouldnt take more than 15mins.
