    Break In Method on RS7

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Good Day,

Looking to see what some of the owners have done here in regards to breaking in the car etc...

We have lots of Audi's and we generally just drive them the way we normally would once oil temps are up. No real "break in" schedule. Other than not running a consistent speed/rpm on highway for extended periods of time. Curious to see if people have taken a different path.

    Please advise.

Here is our new RS7. Not picking it up for another 3 weeks or so. Looking forward to it

I've read in many, many places and have been told by Audi mechanics to simply drive it like you stole it. Waiting for it to warm up and varying the RPMs is important, but flooring it to redline and then letting the motor drop down to 2,000 RPM's is the best way to seat the rings with back pressure. If you break it in nice and easy there is a much higher chance that your motor will burn more oil.

I use a modified version of this. Once the fluids are completely warm (which will take 20-30 minutes), slowly take the car to a point on the tach (say, 5,000 rpm to start) and then let it coast down to about 2,000 rpm under engine braking. Repeat several times. As mileage increases, up the start point to 5,500, 6,000, 6,500. Change the oil at 600-1,000 miles. Finish break-in period and drive normally (continuing with the practice of letting the fluids warm completely before hammering on it).

To relieve you of the stress of doing so correctly, I will reluctantly volunteer to perform the break in period for you. No charge. Just out of the goodness of my heart.

    No, really.

I bought mine..and drove it like any other car. I did the APR flash at 600 miles. I now have 1500 and the car just seems to get faster...and faster.

Read your owner's manual. It specifically tells you what to do in there.

I have not yet taken delivery of our RS7 but I *assume* its the same old song in the manual. This is our 14 Audi and they basically all read the same. Perhaps RS manuals are different and outline different procedures however I doubt it.

I was looking for peoples personal experiences if any.

    Basically you're saying RTFM

    Depends who you ask.

A lot of motorsport root guys would toss the idea out the window. Does it hurt to keep it under 4K RPM's for 1K miles? Depends on the car...

I have a question though, since the RS7 is made by Quattro, i know that Quattro tests the cars quite hard and i'm sure the engines are put on engine dynos where they reach redline many times, no?

Right. Break it in the Audi way and there is a much higher chance that it will burn more oil, as well as a lower chance that the motor will blow under warranty. If the motor has a defect I want to push the hell out of it to find it while still under warranty.

    Just my 2 cents.

And you are saying this based on what? It's you versus the manufacturer of this car.

I did, and curious what brings more authenticity: the owners manual of a $100k+ car or a dudes website?

The website old, most likely before you ever went on the internet. It's good stuff, you can't go to any automotive forum without seeing that website pop up.

    It's literately internet history.

Owned an RS 7 for about a week now, and spoke at length to the service manager about break-in. Have to agree with some ppl here on break-in. I would push the engine hard as he states to help seal the pistons, and as mentioned burning oil is a major damaging result. You have the first 1500 miles to do this. He did take a seminar on the RS models from Audi engineers. He also stated that it's not necessary to drive at high speeds, just challenge the RPM gauge as much as you can, teach the car how you'd like it to perform. Obviously it's important to mention that take precaution to allow engine temp to warm up, and ease into it once you get on the highway.

The best way I've found is to shift to manual and up/down shift. It's not necessary to keep desired RPM running long, just shifting into the spectrum is enough.

I don't know if there is a "correct" way of doing this :)...just my two cents ladies & gents

^Thanks Kenshin, that is logical, valid advice from great sources on one of those religious debates akin to oil change intervals. It also blends the long-held theory of drive it like you stole it to bed the rings and cylinders, with thoughtful guidance about challenging RPM's without driving at mach schnell and warming up fluids prior to pressing the vehicle. I liked your line about teaching the car how you'd like it to perform.

Realistically - I CHALLENGE anyone who just picked up an RS7 and *not* push the engine

So, by default human behavior, most RS7 owners are golden on the break-in procedure lol

if you ever watch ultimate factories or shows that show you how cars are built, bmw, mb, Porsche, audi, Maserati, Ferrari, lambo, etc. etc. the cars and/or motors are already redlined and taken up to triple digit speeds to ensure everything is functioning and working properly. some are done in their engine room with computers monitoring everything and some are done on their test track and/or real roads. your engine has already been raped by someone, as long as everything is up to operating temps before going into the higher rpms, i dont think it makes much difference. ive never broken in any of my cars, i just make sure the cars at operating temp before i put my foot down. my s6 burns zero oil in the 12k miles ive had it.

I drive it the same way whether it's brand new or 2 years old. I always wait until the engine gets to temperature, then run it hard on occasion or when the situation calls for it, even if it has only 10 miles on the odo.

The exception is if I take a brand new car on a long distance road trip... in which case I try to vary rpms by going up and down gears when cruising on the highway up until about 1k miles... but that doesn't stop me from blasting out of every toll booth or rest stop ramp along the way :)

I've broken in 3 new Audi's using this technique, 2 of them are known high oil burning motors, a B8 3.0T S4 and a 4.2 R8. None have burned oil or had any problems. I understand wanting to treat an expensive car super good, I think this method is just that.

    Motorman breaking = only way

My S8 was redlined the day of pickup. Every week I make sure to run it to the red line a few times. Now I have the apr tune after 8000 miles. No oil burn and good gas mileage. With the tune it's almost impossible to hold it down for long.
Your look down and 120 mph is a few seconds away.

My daugthers S4 also had the same breaking.

Motor break in is already taken care of at the factory before delivery.
