Turbo Whilstle Paranoia...? - NOW ZERO POWER...!!!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm probably getting paranoid in my old age but in trying to diagnose my latest MIL I turned off the radio for a while to listen to the engine for a while. Big mistake...!!! I started to notice noises that I'm not sure I've heard before. The low-pitched whistling under gentle acceleration got my attention the most. A heavier foot or off throttle and the sound goes away. Probably completely normal but like I said, I'm in the grip of car hypochondria at the moment...

Check out the video here and then tell me they all sound like that.

Check all of your hoses and PCV ect.. Sounds like air is squeezing past something. However, based on the video it doesn't sound like your car is in immediate danger.

Might account for the P2187 that randomly pops up every few hundred miles.

And I don't know if you could tell from the video but the whistling stops if I press the throttle a little harder... like it seals up the leak.

So... this morning on the way to work the whistling was still very noticeable, EVEN with the radio turned up. The car was driving fine and no CEL. Then, as I left one highway to merge onto another I suddenly discovered I had very little power under acceleration... and by very little, I mean like 50-65 mph in around 30-40 seconds on flat ground...!!! Oddly, the whistling sound was far less noticeable, if any at all. From a complete stop the car seems to pull away fine under normal acceleration but as the speed rises, the power drops. What's weird is that there is still no CEL...!!?

In the parking lot at work, I popped the hood and tried to see if I could see or hear anything and had a colleague rev the engine at different speeds. I couldn't hear anything untoward and the main air intakes all seemed to be fine from filter through to the manifold, at least what I could see from the top of the engine bay. I also noticed that my range estimator is currently telling me I have 520 miles left with 50 miles already covered on a full tank... wouldn't that be nice.

I suspect whatever was leaking through a small gap has now opened up completely. Could this be a DV issue or have I popped a lower air hose...? But why no CEL...?

It could definitely be the DV. You need to leak test. It's the only way you'll find it.

I'll check the DV when I get home tonight. From what I've read it's easy enough to pop off. Will a tear/failure be obvious or is there an ingenious way of testing it? I don't have my VAG installed laptop with me so I can't look at the boost on the way home...

Well if you still have a diaphragm style , it should be fairly obvious. Lots of options to replace it with. Rev D (Piston style), GFB DV+, Forge. But if you're planning on staying stock, just replace it w/ Rev D. If you plan on tuning it (do it!) I'd explore other options.

If it is the Diverter, we stock the REV.Ds!

    Clicky!

They are very easy to check. I have a quick DIY HERE!

Was there a recall/TSB for the uprated DV (rev D)?

How much does the dealer charge for a DV (part only)...?

From what I remember it wasn't cheap.

Why start a new thread if the problem wasn't resolved?

Because this is no longer concerning a whistling turbo. Based on previous forum experience, people who have already read a thread and decided they can't contribute will rarely revisit the thread. As I can't change the title of the thread to reflect the dramatic turn of events (who would have thunk) then it seemed more productive to start a different thread with the new symptoms which may attract productive commentary from those who had no comment on the original thread.
