Is it possible to get curb rash and not realize it?

The other day I washed my car and noticed some curb rash on the front left rim. I hand wash my car every week and I keep my car in tip top shape so when I saw the curb rash I was perplexed. I already got it repaired today by Son Tran here in Socal, but I just wanted to know whether anybody here has gotten any curb rash and not realize it. I remember the only other time I curbed my wheel and I definitely felt that one. I'm curious whether it's possible for this to happen without knowing it, similar to when you're working on your car later to find your hand full of cuts you never even felt.

I think one factor is how exposed the lip is. I'm sure that during daily driving it might be possible to clip a curb, especially if you drive in shit weather. A wide rim with a super stretched tire would def be more prone to damage in this case. Though doubt it would be serious curb rash, just a scuff.

That's my wife. She ignores it when she gets one.
