    A8 D3 3.7 cold engine noise

    Hi guys,

first post so please be gentle!

I have had diesel A4s before and took the plunge and got myself an 04 A8 3.7 BFL engine code. I have had it for about 3 months and have recently noticed a slight rattle (1-2) seconds on a cold start (starting to get nippy in the mornings). I know the s4 4.2 engines have this when the tensioners are failing but the BFL has a timing belt and then chains on the cams so assuming this is the culprit.

Here is the youtube link to the sound i recorded

Does anyone else have any input or ideas other than removing cams and replacing both tensioners on both banks? i know they are pricey but it is a doable job.

Other than mentioned idle is sweet and it is a nice solid fully serviced engine just reaching 120k.

    Niki

Hard to say.It is possible its the tensioners, pretty common noise is heard because tensioners work off of oil pressure so inital star on a cold morning you will hear that, but I guess changing the tensioners would help reduce the noise.

So i shouldn't worry about it too much? started it up this morning after -5 last night and no noticeable noise, so it sometimes happens and sometimes not.

I have been checking out some other threads and some say changing the oil grade might help, currently running 5w30.
