Questions you thought were too dumb to ask

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
They have this thread in the B6 Section and I thought we could use one in the B7 section.

So here is the place to feel free to ask anything you want about your car, there is no question too dumb. If you read something in this thread you have the answer for, please chime in.

I think this way we will avoid new posts in the section with question that have been covered numerous times.

    I'll start :

Where do you guys mount the Load resistor/heatsink from your LED fog lights bulbs to avoid melting bumper material?

Is there a way to tighten up leather on seats (Recaros)? Mine has spots that sag a bit from things sitting on them and stretching them slightly and it looks sloppy.

If you've got a set of heated Recaros, then deal. I don't even care about color.

Check the option code tag in the spare tire wheel well. My '08 has 7K7 (Tire pressure control, frequency 433MHz basic level version). The relevant codes I found when researching my option tag are listed below.

7K0 Without tire pressure warning light
    7K1 Tire pressure warning light
7K2 Tire pressure control system, direct measurement
7K3 Tire pressure control, frequency 433 MHzhigh level version
7K4 Tire pressure control, frequency 315 MHzhigh level version
7K5 Tire pressure control, frequency 315 MHzwith reduced transmitting power
    7K6 Flat tire indicator
7K7 Tire pressure control, frequency 433 MHzbasic level version
7K8 Tire pressure control, frequency 315 MHzbasic level version
    7K9 Flat tire indicator

Set both sides to the same temp and then hold the Auto button as you increase/decrease the temp. As soon as you see the other changing exactly with the drivers side just let off of the auto button and now your drivers side controls will control the passenger side. I yell at my wife everytime she hops in and starts messing with the temp on her side. Sets off my OCD for some reason lol

Go in your trunk under the carpet and find your build sheet look up the codes and find all the options your car has

Or see the post like 3 or 4 above yours

Absolutely. Just need to find yourself a good auto upholstery shop. There are several ways to address that, depending on where and how bad its sagging. They might suggest you add a thin layer of foam or fiber.

This type of work can be pricey though.

You mean the climate control? Just hold down the one nearest the driver for a few seconds. They will then sync and you can control both sides with one button.

Anyone have a picture of the widow maker jack in its plastic holder? I can rebuild my race brakes, ohlins shocks, etc, and can't even figure how to put the damm thing back in its holder. Been trying forever! The auto body shop took it out when repairing the car and they couldn't get it back in the plastic holder either.

I think it's move the fronts to the rear (same side) then next rotation you cross them (rear right to front left etc) but that's for a front wheel drive car. Not sure if 4x4 has a different process. And as for interval periods, depends if you're stock or lowered. I rotate every 5k (every oil change) only because of the camber that's on the car when it's lowered. For stock I use to rotate at the earliest every 10k

According to my owner's manual, you just swap front/back and keep them on the same side. Always seemed pointless to me as opposed to criss-crossing them, but what do I know?

^ To even out the camber wear its worth it and if im not mistaken our cars are 60-40 awd we might have a bit more wear on the rear tires? Correct me if im wrong.

I've read you can retrofit the leveling part of it but its very expensive and a pita, the left to right part never heard of anyone doing it.

Owner's manual states front to back for tire rotation, same side. That's how I've always done it, partially because it's a hassle to get the car fully suspended in the air.

Don't turn this thread into "I was too lazy to search so I posted here" either. The afs bi-xenon question has been covered many, many times.

Sets off my OCD for some reason lol
it's much easier than that, you don't need to set the temperatures the same. you only have to hold down the auto button for few seconds until you see the passenger temperature changing to same temperature as driver side. that's all.

If you have a Quattro, it's front to rear, same side only. No left to right needed.

I do mine every other oil change. (~10k miles)

Does the billet valve cover provide any function or is it just for show?

Mainly for show, but it does simplify removing the PCV system a bit. They are also less prone to failure than the stock plastic valve covers. (see Shiro's post about how the oil separator fails)

My tires are directional so switching sides wouldn't do anything at all outside of wear on corning. People have their own theories and preferences but like everyone has stated front to back back to front same side is what the manual says and what most any shop does anymore. Criss-cross use to be the standard but not anymore.
