    Tuning?

From what I have been researching online, the only way to get your audi tuned is by sending out your ecu. Am I correct in saying I cant just drive down to a tuner and get an open source tune? I have an 06 STI as well and the method of tuning those is way less complicated. Im just kind of looking for a straight forward answer on the different options I have for getting this thing tuned. It is bone stock I just want to wake it up a bit, but would rather have it tuned for MY car rather than just a generic tune. Thanks.

You don't have to send out your ECU. Contact Motoza Click It's cheaper then an off the shelf tune and the tune is set for your upgrades.

There is free open source tuning available much like the suburu community, however it's pretty tight knit and if you join expecting a handout you will be beaten down. If you don't mind putting in the work, have at it.

No easy open source tuning (I only know of Saab software, but I suppose Subies have it too now).

Nefmoto is a tough nut to crack. The barrier to entry is SUPER high as far as learning everything. Don't expect handouts as DDillenger said. Having said that there are some VERY smart dudes there and if you're willing to put in a lot of time, you can learn the basics of tuning for our platform.

There are plenty of options that don't involve send away your ECU. For example, search APR's website for an authorized dealer in your area. They'll just hook up and you're done, plus free retunes for life I'm pretty sure, you can check their website for more info. That is just an example.

Thank you exactly what I was looking for. So I dont have to send my ECU out to get "unlocked"? I can just make an appointment with a tuner, have them hook up, tune and be done?

Yea you could do that or you can contact Motoza like a lot of other people on this forum boards are doing and do a remote tune yourself. You don't have to drive anywhere and Dave at Motoza will send you revised tunes until it's up to par with your likings. I haven't heard one complaint about Motoza yet.

I do not want an off the shelf tune. I want it put on a dyno and tuned, I didn't know if this was possible on an audi like it is on a subaru, I didn't know if the ECU is "locked" and has to be sent out and chipped to allow a tuner to go in and remap it.

    It is not locked.
Anybody with the proper cables and the know-how can tune your ecu on a dyno or from logs. The catch is finding somebody with the correct know how to do a custom tune.

Hell a $30 galletto cable on eBay and a few beg too programs and the whole ecu is at your disposal.

You do need to find a knowledgeable ME7 tuner however.

The only shop I've been to was in Manchester. I went there and had the APR trial installed since they are an APR provider. The guys over there seemed pretty cool and they had some nice cars in the lot. I don't think they have a dyno and I don't really think they would do a "custom" tune. I ended up not getting the full tune so once the trial went away that was it. Other then that I've gone to the dealer for two major repairs and everything else since then I've done myself. I try to avoid going to any shops at all for work on my car. I'd rather do it myself and learn from it whether I break something or not it's still a lot cheaper then having someone else do it.
