2013 - Coolant system failure warning

I have 205 on the odometer and got a coolant system failure warning, turn off engine tonight. Was just cruising at 45mph.

Coolant is full and engine temp never went above the half marker. Calling dealer in morning. *Edit* VAGCOM info below

EDIT 12/27/2012: Dealer said that Audi Technical services determined that the control module (brains) of the water pump are reporting the error but mechanically the pump is working fine. They said that 3-5 other 2013's have had this issue and Audi has changed something with the control portion of the pump design. Since it's a new pump it has to be shipped from Germany. Just bad timing with holidays in there. I might get my car back end of next week.

EDIT 1/22/2013: Got the failure again. Awaiting the dealer diagnosis. Diagnosis is that the valve after the pump and the thermostat sensor now need to be replaced. Might get the car back Friday depending on part shipments.

Dealer took a look this morning. Said the code is pointing at the water pump but needs to talk to Audi directly about it. With the holidays it may be until Wednesday so they gave me an A6 to bum around in.

Sucks since its so new but what are you going to do. They just don't want something to go wrong so they rather it just sit until they can get more info.

Sucks to have something go wrong on a brand new car but it doesn't sound serious. Every once in a while, a bad part will find its way onto a vehicle. Nothing is 100% perfect.

Plastic-bodied water pumps were all failing on 2010's and I think early 2011's but were then phased out in favor of metal-bodied pumps. Number of failures since then is near zero.

Let us know what they find out.

It's good they are taking care of it and you by giving a loaner. Honestly before I ordered my s4 I was going to buy another Subaru for this very reason. It decided that the pleasure I got driving it was worth the potential random headache. Hope everything turns out ok.

OP probably paid $55k+ for the car, it has 205 miles on it and 49,795 miles left on the warranty so I would hope "they are taking care of it."

Whaaaaat??? Our water pumps have brains? Did the 2013's go to an electric pump?

2010-2012 have a simple belt-driven pump that, AFAIK, does not have any sort of control module.

Yeah, I'm not sure what is true or not. I can tell you my dealer/service has never been shady and always up front. Maybe they didn't communicate the actual issue 100% but it has something to do with the pump and the signal the ECU is receiving regarding the warning.

Maybe someone with the service manual can provide more info.

Maybe it's the intercooling water pump and not the engine water pump. The one for the intercooler has electronics in it and would throw a code if it was removed, that's why the APR CPS kit doesn't replace the factory pump and instead just adds a second one.

Dubber4life is correct, the problem is with the secondary pump. I'm still without my car and it's pissing me off. I only put 200 miles on the thing. Apparently Audi told my service manager that there have been like 5 other cases reported for this issue, must not be forum members.

They said that this part isn't something that is stocked on the shelves for the 2013. Audi in Germany had to actually go down to the production floor and pull one and then ship it here. My service manager was told it was in the US as of last Thursday so we're hoping for today or tomorrow to get the part and have the car done.

I've been without my car since 12/22 :-/

Well my saga is finally over and I have my car back. Hopefully my first post helps someone at some point who has the issue.

My service manager did say that the secondary pump has changed somehow between my production date (Mid Nov 2012) and now. That is why it wasn't on the shelf and had to be pulled from the production floor.

At least I'm half way to the 30 days out of service I need for the Lemon Law to take effect...good lord.

I'm going to be asking who I talk to. I'll look up the contact to AoA because the dealer has been great and it is not their fault that the issue is happening to my car. That is a good point, I'll be paying my first car payment tomorrow and I've only driven my car half the days in a month.

Audi tech is now having them replace a valve after the secondary pump as well as the thermostat sensor?

I also called AoA and complained that my new 60k car has been in my possession 2.5 of the last 5 weeks. They are reviewing covering my first month's payment and I should know by Friday.

I just got this code this morning while driving to work. Does anyone know how long you can drive the car with the code on? I checked after getting to work this morning and the coolant level looked normal, a little below "MIN" when car is off.

I believe it was 2 faulty flow sensors. Audi bought back the car and replaced it but I've had 2 other cars since then. Sorry I can't be more help.

Mine ended up being a leaky coolant tank. I had to pay ballpark $850-950 for the part replacement. I was not covered by warranty as my car was flagged for TD1. Good luck
