    Volvo V60? Where's the love?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I am surprised there isn't any excitement over the new Volvo. It is european, it is a wagon, it is available with a turbo 6 cyclinder with 325 hp and 354 lbs of torque, it's awd, its a top safety pick, it takes regular gas, good warrenty and it isn't priced into the statosphere. I realize this is an Audi forum, but since Audi has abonded us in the U.S., the Volvo deserves a look. It certainly makes a more intriguing value proposition than what BMW is offering.

But does it come with a proper gearbox?

and is it any better in the snow then my parents old Volvo's? because those things got stuck on our driveway all the damntime whilst our Audi would drive up it no problem.

We complain, but we're still Audi fans. We like other wagons, but we're still Audi fans. We're Audi fans. And this is an Audi forum.

    Did I mention Audi?

I have a thing for the S60R and the S40 T5....but people called me names because I liked the underpowered 2.5L i5 turbo engines.

I now cower behind the Audi brand

V60 wagon has less cargo space than a VW Golf. It's not a real wagon.

I am an Audi fan as well. If Audi would offer an S4 Avant in the states, I would be in line for one. But I am not a lemming and am not going to jump off the Allroad cliff just because it is the only cliff they want to offer me. Audi has given us two options, take it or leave it. I don't care for that. I love my B8 Avant, and would love to buy a B9 Avant, but I can't buy what they don't sell.

I think both numbers are the seats folded down, but whatever, arguing exactly what cargo capacity it takes to be considered a wagon wasn't my point. The Golf R is a nice car. I could see cross shopping that with the volvo. I think it just helps to make my point. There are other alternatives out there Audi, you have a loyal fan base for your Avants so you had better take care of us. Loyalty is a two way street. I just thouht the Volvo checked a lot of the boxes that us wagon lovers are looking for and surprised it doesn't get mentioned on a forum dedicated to wagons, even if it is audi specific. The BMW gets mentioned ad nauseam.

I like the new F31 328i wagons but it sucks that it isn't available in a 6spd package.

If BMW offered the F31 wagon with AWD and 6spd option, Audi better watch out.

It is pretty sexy looking not gonna lie. I won't lie, I've been looking at the V60 for the past month. Just I'm much in love with my Audi that I'm still hopeful that they will bring an A4 or A6 avant back.

The V60 looks good, the engines sound appealing, the curb weight is reasonable...

...but 8-speed and 6-speed autos only.

    No manual = no deal.

There is a reason why I got a MKVI Golf R after selling my B6 Avant, instead of going with a B8 Avant.
The ONLY two cars I am willing to sacrifice my third pedal for is an RS4 Avant or Panamera GTS. Yep, if I ever get an Audi again, it will likely be used. Though a 400hp 2.5 TFSI RS3 with a 6-speed manual would get my attention..

The 328xi Touring was a pedal away from taking my money.

Even more so for the 328xd Touring.

The V70R that IPD built in '05 was bad ass. I still have this issue of European Car mag around somewhere when they reviewed it. From what I recall, it was a pretty fun, fast, and semi economical little car. My head still turns when I see them on the road today.

My parents had an s60r for 5 or so years. They did euro delivery and everything. Other than looking ok, I feel like they are pretty garbage compaired to any of the S4s. There isn't much of a modding seen(at least compared to audi), the build quality isnt as good, and the engineering isnt as good. If I really wanted a haldex awd I would buy a mkiv r32. They are just slow, heavy, safe, and boring euro sedan.
I drove my parents in the snow once and the thing just would not play ball, it was way to planted. Just refused to over steer.

I am not saying that they are horrible cars by any means though, they do have some redeeming qualities. Ours would throw HUGE fireballs and backfire on overrun when the cats wore out. That was great, chicks dug it.

My advise is always buy an S4, you will be far happier.

I had an 04 V70R for almost 3 years and liked it. Did I love it? No. Lots of electrical gremlins, lousy gas milage but pretty decent power and a pretty good noise. Could have made it faster with some help from IPD but too many things on the car seems liked they wouldn't last (like the 4C suspension). The trunk was awesome and huge and the seats were great (as almost all Volvos are). Although my B8 Avant is down on power and doesn't make as good a noise, it is better in almost every other way. The new V60R though (or R-design)? It looks to be a much better car, but the only thing better about it than an S4 Avant is the fact you will be able to buy it here in North America. If Polestar was able to go crazy with it and produce something like this then we're talking.

As for v60, I like but i don't like nowadays wagon cargo window designs... too small and narrow.

If i have to buy volvo, i d pick v50

V60 RD should cost $50K or more with anything beyond base. I considered it as a former V70R owner.

But I like the Avant better.

Although my biceps have shrunk now that I don't have to make 5 point turns anymore.

That is a really small infotainment display (postage stamp?). It also looks like I could undock the whole center stack like a tablet and take it with me, for when I need a mobile fresh air vent and hazard lights.

If they built it with a proper manual, I'd very interested. Too bad I live in the US where manuals are becoming as rare as bird teeth.

At a minimum if Volvo wants to compete against BMW in the "sporty wagon" market, they need to have a decent dual clutch gearbox. A standard slushbox doesn't give them anything that BMW doesn't already do, and frankly do better.

Volvo needs to position themselves above BMW to compete with them. Simply equaling them will not cut it. In that fight, BMW, with all their name recognition will win every time.

No. Just.....NO. I mean..it's not horrible, it's just not great in any way. The Polestar might be cool, but it's still sort of uglier than even an old Allroad. And The C5/C6 Avants are nice looking Euro wagons..this Volvo thing is trying to lure some Euro fans away from Subraru..by looking MORE like a Subaru.
Personally, I think it's fairly ugly.
I'll keep my S6, which will have a 6 speed and a hair under 400hp soon.

    blech. It's really not great.

After checking out the V60 R-design at the LA Auto Show, I gotta say that it's barely a wagon. I was not impressed by the usable cargo space.

^ Beat me too it. It only has 43.8 cubic feet cargo capacity. That's nothing compared to 59.1 in the B7 avant and 50.8 B8 Avant.

Agreed. It was far less than I expected, although I'll say the overall package wasn't too bad. One of my other issues was the terrible looking center stack. Blech.

The outside is still relatively sexy to me.

Overall, S3 and Macan were the best-in-shoe. Although maybe not what I'll buy. We'll see.
