Clint buys a broken B7, and DOESN'T HAVE TIME to fix it

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I "sold" my white S4 months ago only to find out that the buyer didn't want to pay everything... In the meantime I've been driving this.

It's an '88 auto Jetta with 100hp and the auto trans on it is about to blow up any minute. It was time I found a new DD. About that time I find

The guy actually came on here to ask about next steps. He was driving the car and it started driving like crap all of the sudden. He took it to Audi and they said he needed a "new engine." I have no problem with putting in engines so Clint's next DD was born.

    Car Breakdown:

    - 05.5 B7 A4 2.0T Automatic
    - 140k miles
    - Bixenon Headlights
    - RNS-E
    - unknown Stage 1 tune (APR I think)
    - unknown Test Pipe
    - unknown 18" wheels
    - unknown Lowering Springs

I buy the car in NJ and immediately notice this:

Maybe he popped the HG on Cylinder 3 and it's leaking? So I do a compression test to see what the damage is:

    YES

    YES

    YES

That's enough to tell me it's not a quick fix while I'm in NJ. Car gets transported to FL where I live now:

Now that it's here I tear her down:

OK head is off... First thing I notice is the white bubble things on the valves, looks like it may have gotten hot... possibly carbon buildup.

Anyone notice anything weird about Cylinder 3? Yeah me too.

    Updates to come

So of course I've thought about putting the RS6 motor in, swapping it manual, 2.7T swap, etc. but to be honest I feel like an old man now and just don't have the time to do the swaps I used to. I just want to get this thing running for cheap so I have a DD with AC and a sunroof. I will do another project eventually but not right now

A customer at the shop i work at had a valve melt just like that on their mini cooper s. The carbon build up turns ceramic and bakes onto the valve. A chunk of carbon got stuck on the sealing surface and got extra hot.

must be just age then, you seem to know what you are doing, you'll bring this car up to speed in no time. Good pick up, these cars are solid, and they don't make the new A4s this good anymore....specially the interior build quality.

So do you think the carbon cleaning we're doing by removing the intake is only partially what needs to be done. If the carbon is building up on the other side of the valves and bakes onto the valves creation hot spots....then it sounds like we'd need to remove the head and get this taken care of as well!

Just wondering if we're all driving ticking time bombs.

Not all cars will build up like this as two of the major contributing factors is the quality of fuel and driving habits. The only real fix of course will be putting fuel injectors back in the intake tract. Ive heard that audi is working on doing this to keep valves clean.

I think you CAN reuse them, but they generally break when you re-install them. I've not had the pleasure of removing FSI injectors yet so I'm not certain.

Like the teflon seals. most people just re-use them and don't have issues. You just have to be careful.

No clue I never shop at ECS, dealer prices are cheaper at my local dealer. I just went to the dealership asked for the little two prong holders for the injectors, was told you had to buy the kit so I bought the kit, came with teflon seals, o rings, metal holders( so they won't break like the stock plastic ones), and some other stuff I forget, but it's nice because I've removed my injectors like 10 times since I installed the metal holders and they don't break.

If you plan to keep the car until the wheels fall off and eventually go past StgII. I'd look at this as an option: http://hpfpupgrade.com/Products/Show...e+Cam+Follower

If you aren't sure if you're going to keep it long term, don't bother with the upgraded follower, just get the OEM one.

And yea that ECS kit is what I was about to link to. I'm sure its cheaper at GAP though.

    Kitchen table fun.

Cleaned up the valves with some simple green. Still needs more cleaning

    Done for the day

    and my pile o' parts

I thought I'd be able to get the valve in today but couldn't find lapping compound or the right compressor, had to order this

lol. It's just a 1.8T head, but like 10x more annoying.

    - need a gear puller to pull the cam gear off
    - needed to pull the rear cap off
    - FSI stuff
    - I will say I do like the roller rockers

Otherwise once it's apart it's easy. This carbon stuff was REALLY built up on the valves though. I've been using a razor blade and wire brushes to get them clean.

The 23 stretch bolts and sealant ruin it for me

That's pretty much it though. Just a 1.8t head made 10x more of a pain in the ass to work on. Just be glad you pulled it rather than trying to work on it in the car. Trying to get the timing cover off the back of the head is possibly the most aggravating thing I've done on a car. It's so fucking stupid.

And then the cam cradle sealant. The whole idea of the cam cradle is pretty dumb, but the sealant is icing on the shit cake.
