I probably just missed it somewhere along the way. But good deal! Glad to hear it was just that valve! Hopefully turbo is good - hopefully that missing boost test nipple isn't a bad omen! Best of luck man, it's been fun following this build/repair.

Just curious Clint, how long did it take you to remove the head?

There are times I'd rather remove the head to clean out the carbon really throughly rather than squeezing tools through tight confines with the engine intact. But alas that brings with it more issues to take care of...

Probably 4 hours because of all the unknowns. It's a huge pain though and the headgasket kit adds a bunch of $$

Ok so this thing is basically done with the exception of 2 things.

    1. It looks like this car overheated before which caused this issue. Because of that I'm a bit nervous about it overheating. I've started it up which gave me a CEL for the TS, but I cleared it and it didn't come back. However, the gauge isn't getting warmer and it doesn't feel like the thermostat has popped.

    2. I can't figure out how the hell to route that huge PCV hose that goes to the valve cover. It was on before but beats me now

    1. What's TS? I've done a few timing belts and I've noticed that on new thermostats you sometimes have to run the car for a few minutes, the thermostat won't open though, then you have to remove the coolant cap and let the pressure escape and on the second idle attempt it will finally open.

    2. Are you talking about the PCV hose that goes to the oil filter bracket? or the one that goes from the PCV unit to the intake manifold?

If it's the one to the oil filter bracket, you just hook it up to the PCV unit, and then it routes toward the firewall and down and curves into the oil filter bracket.

New tstat or old Clint? The tstat on my old b7 failed at 70k miles, it was stuck open and thus the engine never really warmed up properly. I tested it in boiling water and it began opening at 50C rather than 80C.

It's basically 95% the same as the b6 coolant system though. Really the main difference is the upper coolant pipe being routed marginally different and the thermostat not having the ecu controlled heating element that the b6 tstat has.

all good on the coolant front. Had the oil pressure light pop up this morning. I drove it ~30 miles to work and it was fine, was going to do the oil change as soon as I got home from work, looks like I'll be dropping it off at a quick lube somewhere close

oil pressure light or low oil light? Low oil is no big deal, oil pressure could be worse.

Pressure. Yes I know it's not good. It's at the local Meinecke getting an oil change, I told them to toss some engine cleaner stuff in at idle for a few minutes also. We will see.

My theory right now is that I liberally used sealant on the cam cage and some of it got into the pan. I drove the thing like 30 miles before the light came on

nope, unless I'm mistaken as long as the cam gear matches the crank gear and the cams are timed to each other there is no need. This isn't really different than a 1.8T other than the cam cage and HPFP

That would be awesome if it is just a goop of sealant and an oil change fixes it.

Also, for your bulb out, check the licence plate bulbs. I hate when ones in the front go out and you have to take the bumper off to get to them...

    Interesting....

I haven't gone down this road before but probably will when its time to change the cam chain tensioner. I thought it was used to ensure the cams are timed to each other, not sure how you'd do it without it. But have some time to research it so I'll figure it out eventually.

Well oil pressure is not ever that confusing. Your motor either has no oil or is blocked from something. I have oil so I assumed a blockage.

Well speaking of bulbs I have that stupid Dipped light warning in a brand new bixenon. Anyways I saw the light that's out last night it's on the taillight, no biggie.

It helps to go by the book when you're unsure, but once you understand the concepts it makes sense. The cam gear only has 1 way to go on, so as long as the cam and crank are together, and the cams are together (They have to be when putting the head back on btw, or the headbolts don't work), you're money

Yea its pretty simple really. I marked up my cam sprockets and the chain when I swapped my intake cam. I transferred the mark to the new one VERY carefully and then lined of the mark with the proper chain teeth. Its not rocket science. I tried to get ahold of one of those tools, but didn't find any locally and wasn't about to splash out on the $200+ they cost..

The 1.8t Has the same general head design and timing layout as the 2.0t and we don't have a special cam holding tool. You just count 16 links from cam to cam.

    Thanks guys.....

I've done the 1.8T before so survived that without a hitch. I suspect I will go the same route as Charles described which is what I would have done if I didn't bump into the existence of the special tool.

Ok so the idiots at Meinecke parked my car over this curb so when I backed up it ripped half the bumper off. SMH

Also, I'm having a hell of a time with the coupler going to the rear coolant flange from the heater core. I think I'm good and it's on tight and then it leaks/pops off. Haven't overheated because I watch the coolant gauge like a hawk but that's getting old

    Slowly getting there

thanks man, unfortunately this car is going to my mother on Friday so I won't be posting any other exciting stories. Her Jeep motor went and I just so happened to have this car. I'll be getting my white B6 S4 back due to a bad buyer. Not too bummed to have a B6 2.7T back though

I'll do that tonight. I never get to drive the B7 anymore because the fiance refuses to drive my b6 due to the dying clutch, haha.

Do either of these help? The hose that comes off the pcv pointing towards the firewall (#2) goes to the IM. #3 goes to the oil cooler I believe.

Are you talking about either of those? or #32?

Well I have that IE plate so mine looks a little different. I'll see what I can do tonight. Thanks!

In other news I got pissed off at work because this coolant hose kept popping off and I was doing roadside repairs on 95 and still couldn't fix it. So I got into the work parking lot with full clothes on and checked this hose out. This stupid sealing ring was offset and causing the hose to not seal correctly

    Parked her for dinner

New plugs last night, not sure what to make of the old ones they look very lean (maybe that's normal for FSI?)

Also did an extreme engine flush, some people might disagree but I had the oil pressure light pop up quickly again yesterday and can't have it happen again. Steps are below

    1. Drain oil, fill with 4L of diesel gas
    2. Let it sit overnight (DO NOT START)
    3. Drain gas, change oil with cheapo stuff and new filter
    4. Drive for 15 minutes, do full synthetic change with filter

And no lights today, runs pretty good

Other culprit could be the oil pressure sensor. I got an oil pressure warning on my B6 S4. Thought maybe it was a blockage due to flaking on the inside of the cam cover; the flakes finding their way down to the pan and then blocking the intake. Turned out to just be a bad sensor. Cheap part, hard to get to on the S4.

Diesel gas? Not sure I would have the balls to try that one out.

I would suggest an oil change again soon though. There is no way you got all the diesel fuel out after the fist change. I also don't think it will harm anything.

I am on my second oil change since the diesel. I did a basic oil change after, drove it, and then did yet another oil change
