Check the ground post for a loose connection. It's under the coolant expansion tank on the fake firewall.

yeah not seein it. Bunch of bolts and screws missing. Makes me wonder what this car has been through.

I saw a youtube video illustrating some troubleshooting on an S4 a while back and the symptoms sound the same. In that case it was a bad ground putting a lot of noise into the sensor circuit. They ended up fixing it as ilyafil suggested and tightened the ground connection on the firewall.
