DIY Rear OEM backup camera done, without rear parking sensors

I was sad when i got my Prestige that it had no rear camera, not sure why it comes with the P+, so it was my goal to put one in eventually.

I was able to find a used camera and module of eBay for $200 shipped off an s5.

I sourced the wiring harness from Kafatec. http://www.kufatec.com/index.php?mai...t8a9g68a7ckg92

All the information I found online said that the car needed to have rear parking sensors for the rear camera to function.

To my suprise after installing it and coding the car, the camera works perfectly!

Took me a total of 4 hours to do this Mod since it was the first time taking apart the interior.

    Brain part number i used: 8T0 907 441, Camera part: 5N0 827 566 C
    Bran bracket Part:8K0907392A, N01508210(nut), N0901486 (bolt), N90168604(clip)

    Camera, Brain and wiring harness:

Installing OEM rear camera in the trunk. you have to remove the plate and plate holder to get the camera in. The hardest part about the trunk is putting the safetly latch cable back onto the cover.
I used DavidB8's writeup on taking the trunk lid apart: http://www.audienthusiasts.com/Proje...yTriangle.html

wiring it up, running the wires is fairly simple, all the wires are exposed and you just zip tie them to the existing harness going back into the trunk.

wiring the power to the fuse box, It pretty neat how the fuse holders come apart and you just plug in the pin from the harness. Only issue i had was where the factory backup fuse goes (E #6) there was no power on the opposite leg so i added another power tap. The additional wire tap i used(000 979 023E).
DavidB8's writeup on how to remove the fuse panel and insert the wires: http://www.audienthusiasts.com/Proje...ssoryPlug.html

The CAN bus wires and video wires you have to run up to the front of the car. There is a High and Low CAN wire that you wire into the CAN bus plug in the right side fuse panel.

There are only the 2 wires you need to run to the front of the car along the right door sill, the CAN and the MMI video signal. You need to remove the MMI unit from the center of the dash, so you need 2 radio removal tools.

I used DavidB8's guide to remove the glovebox http://audienthusiasts.com/Project_GBCooler.html

Look it works! Finally have a backup camera in this car. The lines move when the wheel turns also.
    :

The only coding I did was :
Address 19, you select in the install list, the rear backup camera. (its a checklist with vagcom, no bit setting)
Address 5F, byte 07-bit 1, to turn the camera function on in the MMI.

The backup camera module was left at the s5 settings, i couldnt decifer out the instructions from kafatec, so i left it, i believe it is Address 6C coding 1001008.

I hate my warts, I've hated them on every car I've ever seen, but I still broke down and got the ludicrously priced MMI+. I also hate that I can't back out of my garage without my car beeping at me. Why can't they only beep at me if am actually going to hit something?

Had I known you could install the camera without them, this would have been one more check in the save $3k column.

You need full MMI to have the rear camera - it is not compatible with the non Nav system.

Thank you for posting this! When i purchased my 2012 s4 earlier i thought it was going to have it since it had mmi & nav only to find in the 2012 model year itnwas an option.

I really want to add a camera and like you said was told to do it i had to add the sensors.
    This is great news!

How did you run the cables to the front, routing? Also what did you have to code and How did you code it. I was also told my entire mmi system would have to be removed and sent to Audi to be coded.

updated first post with more info. the wiring was pretty painless to do, the only tricks were releasing the fuse holders and connectors. i was suprised also i didnt need to send out the mmi unit as instructed.

    i have a 2010 with MMI 3G.

I'm surprised you didn't get a back up camera and you have Prestige. I would take that car back. I made sure I had everything I wanted on mine before I left. The only option I wish I had was dampening the suspension but its not a deal breaker. Neither is that driver assist package. But I was sure to get back up camera with my nav. Which MMI do you have? Are there two different ones?

When the Tsunami hit Japan, parts for the rear camera were not able to be obtained by Audi. So they built the cars without the rear cameras. Audi was supposed to add the camera once the parts became available. Most likely, the original owner never returned to get the camera retro fitted?. It should have been standard on a Prestige. Not so on the Prem+, but could be added

Does anyone know how to turn on the option to see city buildings in 3D? Is that automatic when you get close to buildings. I can see the google maps in 3D but the buildings are still flat.

One more driver side or passenger side? Which way did you run the wires?
Thanks again, I hope I can do this to my car. I really wanted a backup camera.

All the wires ran on the passenger side (right side) I just ran them along the door sill with the other wires coming from the trunk area.
The harness comes with a set of instructions also for the wiring. Its pretty generic but does outline what pins you need to connect the harness into on the existing plugs in the car. The confusing part was the CAN LOW and HIGH wires, it had you put them on Pin 14, but 14 was already used! Looking at how the connector was designed, there are banks of "CAN Lines" which i guess group the signals. I just used the next open slot in the connector in the same group. I used pin 19. One thing nice is the Audi connectors have the pinout on them.

Here is a picture I found of the CAN connector.

Sorry for a dumb question, but where is this CAN connector located?, its not on the CAN gateway is it?, if it is then I have a different 20 pin gateway with an optical input too!

Bumping an old thread. I found this connector (I think) but see how to get it out, did you figure it out? @johnnySV maybe you can assist?

Great write up, I am attempting this now.

One thing I notice immediately after installing the camera, is that the latch only actuates when the trunk is open. When I shut it, the button on the new camera/handle doesn't function all of a sudden and I have to open with the key. Is this just a coding issue?

Thanks. You have me looking for parts now! LOL
I appreciate you posting on this. Still worried about the MMI needing to be recoded. Not sure if you just got lucky because it was a Prestige.

Anyone know what they charge if you have to send off for coding?

Worked like a charm thank you!!!

One thing to add; the control unit I had was new and I kept getting a steering error and the guide lines would not show. I changed the above coding you had to 1000008 and now I see the guide lines when reversing and they move based on steering position. The only thing missing is when in parallel parking mode I see the colored boxes for parallel parking but no guide lines. Thinking this maybe something associated with the parking sensors. Planning on adding the rear park sensors tomorrow so will confirm after I finish.

Btw. I found the above coding solution at the below link. All credit to Audi R8 on that.

I saw some on ebay but they wanted a bit much.

Also where does the brain mount, in the rack on the left side of the trunk?

Awesome, great post! I'm very interested in doing this. The link to the Kafatec wiring harness seems to be broken, would you mind posting the part number?
It looks like all of the other parts are easily sourced, except for the camera. Gonna keep searching for that.

It looks like it was this harness (correct me if I'm wrong) http://www.kufatec.com/shop/en/Audi/...i-A4-8K-MMI-3G

I'm interested in trying this out, like cspcrx, can people who've done this let us know if this worked for them without having to send in the mmi unit (year s4 would be useful too). thanks so much this looks awesome!

i listed the part number in my OP, its a fairly large bracket that mounts inside the right rear area behind the fuse panel. The brain slides into it.

That is the correct cable, the one i ordered. So far me and Sharontha have it working without having to send the unit in.

Where did you put the two CAN wires? I see you ran them to the area behind the glove box but what pins?

What transmission do you have? Do the manual transmissions need a signal from the reverse light to trigger the camera or is that the signal from the CAN?

My kit did not come with an additional wire for a signal so I am a bit confused. Does the power wire go to the fuse box or the reverse bulb?

I got that much other than it was 19 and what other spot? I guess I need to go take a look at that connector. Is that one accessible without removing the glove box? My CAN wires did not come with pins on them so I need the part number of that connector so that I can order them.

Still doesn't answer the transmission question though.

Ok, it is accessible without taking the glovebox out. Some wiggling is in order but it is doable. The connector is 4E0-906-230 (T46). It uses repair wire 000-979-009-E. The crimp on terminals are coming up as N-907-647-01 but I cannot find them via a dealer (eBay or Bold-Sport).

According to MotoLogic wiring diagrams, the CAN high wire runs to 15H of the T46 ABS connector and the CAN low wire runs to 15L of the T46 ABS connector. This is all according to a 2013 Audi A4/S4...I couldn't look up any newer models.

It also states that the two video wires go to pins 11 and 5 of T12 connector on the back of the MMI.

DIY Rear OEM backup camera done, without rear parking sensors

Got everything working tonight. I just need to tuck all the wires now.

2015 A4 (manual trans) Premium with Navigation Plus, no 2G/3G. I used pins 19H and 19L for the CAN wires and pins 5 and 11 of the blue T12 plug on the back of the MMI for the video. I used coding 1100006.

    Bending guidelines also work.

Hey guys I just finished the install on all this using the address 5F 07 byte and turned on the backup camera module on address 19.

    And did an MMI reset.

I know I have power to backup camera module since I can write to address 6C.

No video or anything pops up when I select reverse.

I did get this fault code in the 6C address:

    02203 - audio / video input 1
    007 - short to ground.

    Any thoughts??

    2010 S5.

Thank you infinkc for the wonderful writeup!

I just performed this mod successfully.

    Notes:
The Kufatec cable is well worth the money, as it comes with very detailed wiring instructions.
You will have to remove interior door lining trim. Get some trim removal tools or you will break clips.
Nowhere on the internet could I find the +ve camera wiring location in the right rear fuse box for a switched 12V. My manual is also in French, which does not help. I ended up guessing (hopefully) correctly to use the mostly empty fuse carrier's supply.

    (ebay) Trunk handle + camera = $130
    (ebay) Control module = $150
    Cable from Kufatec = $100

I installed everything last summer but only got around to coding the camera in the other day.

Camera comes on when I go into reverse, but no lines. The camera also stays on when I shift out of reverse.

    I followed these coding instructions:

The only coding I did was :
Address 19, you select in the install list, the rear backup camera. (its a checklist with vagcom, no bit setting)
Address 5F, byte 07-bit 1, to turn the camera function on in the MMI.

The backup camera module was left at the s5 settings, i couldnt decifer out the instructions from kafatec, so i left it, i believe it is Address 6C coding 1001008.
My car has the parking sensors and navigation.

    Any ideas? Coding issue somewhere?

My camera also stays on for a few seconds after shifting out of reverse.

I did not use OP's 6C coding. I can check what I used in a bit.

Did you get the exact part numbers listed for the camera and control module?

I wasn't being patient enough. Camera turns off and returns to the screen I was on after some time.

    Still no lines though.

    Same part numbers as listed.
