How to auto center current location in navigation?

It seems that the 2013 S6 navigation system is smarter than me. If I use the navigation and set a destination everything works fine. And sometimes when I use map mode without entering a destination, everything works fine.

But other times, the cursor will remain centered, and eventually I will drive completely off the screen. From that point forward, the map is worthless to me, since my location isn't shown on the display.

I haven't been able to figure out how to exit whatever mode I was in above, although it did seem to reset itself after a couple ignition cycles.

Can anyone help me to understand what mode I must be getting into when this happens, and tell me how to exit that mode and return to "normal" map mode?

on the older MMI in the 2010-2012 models, you just hit the return button. moving the joy stick sets that spot, then to get it back to normal mode, hit return.
It will reset itself if the car has been off, key out of the ignition for 10 minutes IIRC
