Well..it's new as in a replacement. I've had my S4 since December but Audi pre-lemon'd it and built me a new one.

Anyway, this is coming unchecked now.

I doubt there's any, but would you be able to check if the ABS fault code is present via VAG COM?
If none found, would you be able to log a full scan and share it here so we can compare yours against ours to see if there are any other settings that might cause the ABS fault code?
    TIA!

Just got my vagcom today and the DSR is checked. The car was in service since last August so this vehicle is definitely an early build. However, only had the slip issue once and haven't had it since. roughly around 2k miles on the car.

What is the consensus now for a 2013 S4 /S5?. What I am getting from reading this thread is we should deselect the DSR and not worry about the ABS fault code? Those who are a couple weeks into this change now, any issues?

I've put well over 700 miles since the VAGCOM mod and not experienced anything negative, with an exception of the ABS error code.
However, I'd love to find a way to get rid of the ABS error code.

I likewise have no problems with ABS functionality since unchecking DSR, but the error code remains. I'm *hoping* the error is just some kind of check sum thing that doesn't disable anything, just alerts a tech that something is awry.

2013 Steering Issues VAG COM Fix?

Well over 1,500 miles since unchecked, no issues at all with ABS functionality. Have not scanned yet, but "assume" I have same fault code. I agree with other poster, it is likely a notice to tech that something else has been adjusted. Steering control is worth the ABS fault code in my opinion

Since your car is new and came with this fault you could just call your dealer and ask about it. I would be interested to hear what they have to say about it.

There are a fair number of folks who said they didn't have the ABS code, but I have yet to see anyone's scans that show this. Seems to me that everyone is getting the ABS code, which appears to be no big deal, but curious if anyone really has turn DSR off and not gotten the ABS code.

    Thanks,

This is a different ABS error code then the rest of us are dealing with. If I were you, I'd clear the errors and see the dealer if it returns. For the record, this is the error message along with the coding for the steering module I've been using:

I’m a tad lost here ... probably due to my noob status but please set me straight...
From the original post, the instructions were

“The box is under 44-electric steering assist module > coding > long coding > byte 0 > bit 4 (uncheck box for "Driver Steering Recommendation")”
In looking at the above scan,
    Address 44: Steering Assist (J500) Labels: 8K0-909-144.clb

    No fault code found.

It looks like bit 4 is a 1. (I am assuming that the counting starts with 0 as in typical digital bit coding, so the bit 4 is actually the fifth digit counting from left to right (e.g., the second “1”) and that a byte is 8 bits long. If that is the case, it would appear to me that the bit is “checked” (based on an assumption that checked = a “1”)
I know I have several assumptions in the above, please let me know if any are wrong.

    Thanks

!!!! BINGO...something is awry here! FANTASTIC CATCH. laakness DOES NOT have DSR active.

    (1) Here is a coding from my car before I made the switch:

    Coding: 100000010001

    (2) Here is after the switch:

    Coding: 000000010001

    (3) Here is laakness:

    Coding: 010000010001

To answer your question, the coding is displayed in Hex with byte 0 comprising the first two LEFT digits, byte 1 the next etc. So my original coding (1) has "10" for byte zero, corresponding to the binary string "00010000", where DSR is active because bit 4 (first one on right is bit 0) is toggled. You can see after I applied the coding (2) that the byte becomes "00" with DSR presumably off.

NEXT STEPS: It appears that the dealership is coding the module at byte 0 with the binary string "00000001" which could be the FIX that we're looking for to remove the abs coding error while turning off DSR. I'm at work right now and don't have VCDS on hand, but I'll see tonight if I can code in this string and fix the error.

Nice job asking the dumb question, just might be the ticket we've been looking for!!

Sitting here trying to replicate the coding above (minus the Charisma coding since I don't have it) and VCDS gives two errors.

Sequence error and out of range error.

The bit that is being changed is "Steering Aid Control Module Locked/Coded". Maybe we need security access first and then to change that bit.

Also, wanted to follow up with some marketing fluff I found from a TRW system of the same name: http://www.trw.com/sites/default/fil...glish_2013.pdf

It appears that one of the important features is "split mu braking assist", which I'm guessing could be why we're seeing the fault with ABS. Seems the DSR works with the the ABS system while braking hard on surfaces with frictional differences. A question with the ABS fault might be "how does the ABS system work when limit braking and turning at the same time"? ABS might function fine while hard braking in a straight line, but this error code could mess up hard braking + turning...

    Cheers,
Interesting, I'll try when I get home, but this is somewhat discouraging.

Edit - Tried at home and ended up with the same result. Couldn't apply the coding due to errors 31 and 22.

Asking around to see if anyone has a lead on the Security Access for the Steering Assist module.

I fired up the VAS PC and there is no coding ability in the Steering Assist section. Either way most everything is done via SVM regardless so coding isn't easy. There is a function to change coding for modified vehicles but it requires an SVM code which I know little about at the moment.

If this is a fix as you guys think above, and my new 2013 (I love buying end of model year for exactly this reason) has the same coding as laakness, should I still buy a VCDS cable (was def. going to before)? Or possible put that money towards Alu Kruez?

If you can find someone local to do vagcom mods for you, then do that and save the money for alu kreuz. If not, vagcom is very necessary imo to do mods, redo them once dealer wipes your codes, or run scans and clear fault codes. I've only had my tool for 2 days and I love it!

My car goes into the dealership today for springs and summer wheels install (yeah I know, "you took it too the stealership?!?" yep, I actually really like and trust my head tech who has been with Audi for 20 years and believe it or not, they were $80 LESS than any other quote I got!). Anyway, I took the wheels and springs over there yesterday with my truck and had a nice chat with my tech about the steering issues and ABS fault code. He said it sounds like DSR has been the issue from the beginning (and if you were to go back through the entire steering thread you would find SEVERAL posts early on where I was reporting what my tech "thought" it was, and in those descriptions, he was describing a faulty "steering angle sensor" which was misreading the grooves in the road or wind gust and trying to overcorrect them with steering assist boost), pretty funny, but my tech was basically describing the issue perfectly, just the wrong reason (faulty DSR instead of faulty steering angle sensor).

I told him as well about the ABS Fault Code issues with disabling DSR and he said since they both communicate related to the electronic stability control system he was not surprised by that. I told him it has been confirmed that they still have functionality. He said not to worry about it.

I also told him I am now flashed Stage I and asked that he not plug my car into Audi's main system, he said he would not and re-affirmed that eventhough that would cause my car to be "flagged" in the system as "tuned". it would not automatically make it TD1. He said they have been advised by Audi in numerous instances that if it is obvious the issue with the car has nothing to do with a tune, such as issues they have had pop up on other cars without tunes etc. or typical maintenance issues, they are allowed to do the warranty work, if it's a blown piston ring.... no warranty work..... sounds reasonable to me.

Anyway, just thought I'd share my chat with the tech

I also scanned my ECU last night and found the ABS Code, as well as a couple others tat I am going to look into, probably related to a couple other things I have been doing to my car and will be posting about in a couple weeks once it's all done.

    Two questions -

laakness: Any luck clearing the parking brake error code? Assuming that after fixing this you will have an error code free S4 without DSR active...jealous...

Alex: Any luck coding "Steering Aid Control Module Locked/Coded"? I can try to help this weekend if you have any ideas on how to approach this problem. I guess last resort is one could take it into the dealer and see what they say.

I haven't tried yet. Had my grill being installed yesterday and finally got to go hit some golf balls. I'll give it a shot tonight or tomorrow as I'll have some free time.

Unfortunately no luck. I get a sequence error first and then a coding out of range error when tried again. I tried 7 security codes from other modules I found around the web that deal with steering, ABS, etc and no luck. Hard part is that many of the access codes are not published anymore.

    Cheers,

Here is my latest scan. I cleared all DTC's and then ran some errands (30 or so miles) and then scanned. Looks clear.

I'm unchecked and have been for several weeks. I just returned to Canada after picking up a Boxster S in North Carolina. In five days I put on 2,000 km on this Boxster. So I was driving a car with pretty much perfect steering and feel. So when I got home I took out the S for a spirited ride. All I can say is this unchecking mod has cured this major fault. The feel of the S is comparable to the Boxster when in auto. Dynamic in the S is terrible. Dynamic in all other settings is a must. Great find boys.

I took my car to the dealer to have the summer tires installed last week. I think that the steering feels tighter and more accurate since. I am wondering if the dealer made a change similar to the one described on this thread without telling me. I hadn't had any steering issues with 2500 miles on my car. Maybe it's just the difference between summer and winter tires but something is different for the better.

i can tell you that when i switched my 18s with the all seasons to the 19s with summer tires, the steering got a LOT tighter. and i didn't have the dealer do the work, so i can tell you that theres a different feel just from the rubber, without a doubt.

Yup, that's an obvious improvement as it warms up and you have proper rubber compound.

I will be able to comment on this tomorrow. Just switched my winters to Conti. I had no complaints regarding steering after I unchecked DSR option using VAG COM. My steering had weight to it even in comfort. We'll see if there is further improvement with 19" summers.

Re-checked my A5 today to feel the difference. Ticked the car seems to want to fight for who has control, unticked steering is much lighter like running on high tyre pressures, no fight but maybe a little too light. Not happy with abs fault but got a few hundred miles to do tomorrow so se how it goes. Coded drive select made no noticeable difference.

tried to check the box again and I get an error, "coding rejected, error 22:conditions not correct or request sequence error."

    what gives?

was seeing if checking it back took away the abs error. Also have a tpms error.

UPDATE: got it, helps if you have the car on

So, Is everyone's steering OK now? I wonder if Audi is still working on a fix or maybe they are content that we aren't pestering them anymore. Personally I am happy with the revised rack + VAG Com mod. I don't think I would let AOA screw with my car even if they get an "official fix."

I believe they are still working on a fix. I would say 10-15% of 2013 S4 owners with this problem are members of any Audi forum nor are they aware of our fix. I haven't told my dealer that mine is fixed by this simple mod. I was told I would get a call when there was a fix. They must getting pestered on a daily basis about this fault. I see Audi cars driving around daily and when i do I see their cars with the blink I know they they have no idea about vagcom or any other com except for .com.
