Wow... Audi is replacing my entire engine in my 2009 A4.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So my 2009 A4 was in for new pistons and rings to fix my oil consumption issue. Apparently, when the technician was beginning the work, he noticed "some things he didn't like". This was the exact quote from my dealer's service department. They sent the report to Audi and a brand new engine was approved for my car and will be installed next week.

I commend Audi for standing by their car and their customer.

My question... has anyone else experienced this? I assume I will need to break this new engine in like any other?

    Any input is appreciated.

I think a lot has to do with the dealer when it comes to the extent that Audi is willing to make repairs and/or replace the engine. If the dealer does a good job pleading the case, I expect Audi will go along with the dealer's recommendation which is what I expect happened in the case with the OP.

That is great news and a great show of support by Audi of America. I have heard of this happening in several cases. In one case, the car was out of warranty but because of the dealer documented service history of the problem, including a total failure of part 2 failing, the owner got a brand new engine. One thing that can result in a new engine at the part 2 stage is any sign of damage to the pistons of cylinders. That could be the thing that the technician didn't like the look of. I have been told that if there is any sign of scoring or unusual wear and means a new engine.

It's really good to know that Audi will support owners with this issue.

One week into my purchase I was driving when I heard a clicking noise from the turbo I immediately pulled over called the dealership whom I have never contacted (my first Audi) still under warranty. They said we are sending a tow truck and got it towed an hour away to the dealership free of charge. 2 days later they said they here the clicking and it is coming from the turbo and it will cost to much for us to diagnose further (may have caused further damage). So I got a brand new engine, turbo, and 2 years extended warranty free of charge no questions asked. I am very pleased with audi service.

I'm confused...if you are bone stock and under warranty...any repairs done would be covered and should not be a surprise. In most cases with oil consumption problems, dealers are probably going to save money on labor in the long run for repeatedly testing and replacing parts as opposed to cutting the losses and replacing the engine entirely. Much cheaper to drop in a new engine vs opening it up multiple times for repairs.

My car was burning a quart of oil every 2000 miles or so when I purchased it a year ago. Brought it in and it passed the stage 1 test. About 2 months ago, it started burning a quart every 400 miles. Brought it back in and this time it failed stage 1 and 2. They decided to replace pistons and rings to correct the problem. When they took a closer look at/in the engine, they determined there was additional damage. Hence, the new engine.

So, will my car still have 51K on it... or...... 0?

What is the protocol for breaking in a new Audi 2.0T engine? Can anyone help with this?

i had this work done on my 09 as well but they did not actually replace the whole engine. the previous owner and previous dealer both described it as having had the entire engine replaced but upon further investigation by my dealer, the entire engine was not replaced. they pull the front end off the car and pull the whole engine in order to fix what needs fixing but it would be extremely unlikely and unnecessary for them to replace a whole engine unless the whole engine is bad. that being said, it is possible and it is becoming more common for companies to replace rather than repair parts but thats usually only when the customer is footing the bill.

Yupp right here! I just had my engine replaced as well. Did the piston and rings after I failed the oil consumption test, and then my motor blew entirely 4 days later. They ended up replacing the entire engine under warranty and the bill was about 13k in parts and labor. Been driving with the new motor for about 1.5 weeks now, so they said wait until my 5k service before i rechip the car. Thank god for that warranty!

exactly... many people overlook the fact that the dealer is the middle man and aoa generally goes by their word and if they dont they send a rep to inspect.

Run it like you stole it!

Seriously, vary the revs and engine load. Don't do extended trips at one speed on the highway. Rev it good a few times a week. Generally don't baby it.

The service advisors at my dealer are all pretty cool. They just told me to make sure to switch back to stock when I drop off the car, so the system wouldn't flag me.

Nope, they just told me to be easy on the motor for the first 5k until my service. But I've been mashing it this week. Then I can chip the car after the service is completed.

Probably a "short block" which is everything mechanical. They will probably put all your ignition and fuel system on the new engine.

always best to ask and get it in writing, dont assume with the dealership. i would check now and see. i would think maybe you would have the basic engine/powertrain warranty extended to like 2yrs/100k (usually what the extended warranty is), but the rest of the car will follow your original 50k warranty.

OK... so I have another 48K then. I don't think I'll keep the car that long before trading it in for something newer.

I just got my car back from dealer. Pistons and rings were replaced. So I need to break in engine all over again? For real? I "kinda" went gentle on the car when I bought it 2+ yrs ago, certainly didnt improve or help me avoid the oil consumption problem. I really dont feel like going through the whole break-in process once again. Car is 26K miles now, even if engine parts are "new", maybe its all in my mind but I am not tempted to break-in my "used" car. However I always drive conservatively before the car is fully warmed up. Lets see if the oil issue will improve now that my major repairs are done.

No. We are talking about having an entirely new engine, not just pistons/rings. My car is having an brand new engine installed.

i don't think you have another 48k if your car is a 2009. its either or, whichever comes first, not both. unless you plan on driving 48k miles in under 2 years from when you bought the car?
