I would doubt they ship the motor without heads on there.

    Short block = no heads

    Long block = all mechanicals

What is the protocol for breaking in a new Audi 2.0T engine? Can anyone help with this?
Same thing with the CPO Audi that I purchased. It had many oil consumption issues and they just replaced the engine with a new one. I talked with the previous owner and he said the car practically spent half the 4-year lease in the shop. I've put 40,000 KM on it since I purchased it at 80,000 KM and it's been running great!

Same thing. A friend of mine owned my A4 before me, and just before he sold it to me, he had a repair done (car consumed a lot of oil). A week later, the engine broke down, at about 95000 km running distance. Audi technicians couldn't exactly address the problem though. Brand new engine and voilą, oil consumtion seems to be at normal. This was a 1,8tfsi though, and as sad as it sounds, warranty was out only 2 months before the breakdown, so the repairs was pretty expensive for my friend... But I got a great price on an A4 with a brand new engine!

Reeves Audi in Tampa is mod friendly but they said that putting the ECU back to stock won't fool Audi's headquarters. They said that Audi has the capability of detecting a tune even if you go back to stock and lock it out. The Audi dealership has to fill out forms to get aproval for any major work and if the they know that you have a performance tune they can't/won't lie bacause it'll get detected anyway. I'm at stage 2 and I was SOL in getting the oil consumption test done because Reeves thought I'd get flagged with a TD1.

I've been going through the same thing. I bought my first Audi last year (CPO 2009 A4 cabriolet). A month after driving it, the low engine oil light came on. The dealer performed an oil consumption test and the car failed. They replaced the piston rings, which unfortunately did not address the problem. Several weeks later the low engine oil light came on. A second oil consumption test was performed, and the car failed a second time. Audi is now offering a new engine. I'm aware of a bad batch of piston rings that have plagued the 2009-2011 models but can't seem to find independent information about any changes made to the engine to make me feel confident that I won't have to deal with the excessive oil consumption again. I'd appreciate any links/information. Thanks.

You will be getting the updated engine.
Well long block anyways, pretty much everything new. You will not have any oil consumption issue after that, that's almost guaranteed.

I commend Audi for standing by their car and their customer.

My question... has anyone else experienced this? I assume I will need to break this new engine in like any other?

    Any input is appreciated.
I know this is an old post, but I wasn't so lucky.. wish I was, but I definitely feel like I'm getting the short end...

I just went through stage 1, cost covered by the dealer. I've got an 09 with 74k. it failed stage 1 miserably consuming oil at a rate of 3.3 quarts per 1,000 miles. I can also see small tufts of smoke from the exhaust under heavier acceleration so there's some very adequate burning going on inside the combustion chamber. The audi dealer called AOA and was approved to proceed with stage 2 of the oil consumption and replace pistons/rings.

after i left in the loaner, i got a phone call from audi telling me in order to proceed with stage 2, I had to replace the oil pan which had a very slight trickle leak and that skewed the oil consumption tests. after replacing the oil pan, i'd have to go through stage 1 again. the pan would done at my cost, the others costs done at audi's expense. now, under normal circumstances, i'd say this is fine, I understand having to replace an oil pan seal. But, the service advisor and technician at audi commented on how very minimal this leak is and how it very likely wouldn't account for most of the oil consumption. I've been on the phone with AOA trying to get some kind of progress with this, but they simply are unwilling to move forward with stage 2 without me spending over a grand to fix the oil pan. this seems ridiculous to me. There's visible oil burning off through the exhaust and 3.3 quarts per 1k?

I'm not sure what other direction I can go at this point, but it's clear my car has the consumption issue with bad pistons/rings. I have to invest over $1k to fix this thing now. does anyone have any recommendations of someone else I can contact through Audi? I've owned more than 15 audi's and never have i been disappointed. This is the first time where I feel like there's a lack of common sense. After all, why would the audi dealership proceed with step 1, tell me step 2 is about to begin, then pull on the regins? if the leak were that significant to these results, it should've been corrected before taking me through step 1 the first time. I feel like I'm spinning my wheels. Very close to leaving the brand, which would be a shame.

Das4, that pan is $152 at Genuine Audi Parts.(06H103600AA) and the sealing compound is $24 (D174003A2) Change that thing yourself over a few beer and then bring it back. I've an electronic service manual if you have questions or want to check before taking something off.

However, as I stated, there is no gasket on there... and if it isn't perforated by an impact of your fault, I think that should be on them as they need to take the thing off anyway! Especially since the SA and Tech confirm that the leak ( seepage) wouldn't adversely affect stage 1 test results.

This is a pretty old thread but My engine is being replaced (under warranty) right now. According to them its the "long block." I have no idea what that means lol.

He was mentioning that there may be a lot of things that the warranty might not cover...... nuts bolts hoses belts (all of this stuff is a maybe) but they would let me know because they'll use as many things off the old engine as they can reasonably use.

But basically the reason they are replacing it is because i was hearing this rattling noise around 3000 RPM. I was told this might be just a heat shield or maybe even the timing chain. I personally thought it was the turbo. Once they started with the engine, they found that the timing chain had been stretched (by the previous owners) somehow and that it was very very close to breaking. They said that due to this, other things in the engine were warped slightly and was causing the engine to run.......... i forgot the word he used. it meant "badly" lol. They were about to just fix the chain and some things they could see, until they drained all the fluids and there were metal shards and dust everywhere! they said there's no telling what could have caused that but rather than spending the next few weeks doing a complete tear down and looking at every piece of the engine, its best - and cheaper - if it was replaced. Not sure how long it will take for them to fix it, but i hope its done soon. I like the A6 they gave me but man its too big. i want my car back!

A long block is the engine block, pistons, and rings without the head. They reuse your original head. Good luck with the repair!

Edit: That was backwards, a long block includes the cylinder head while a short block does not.

What about new timing chain? Ignition Coils? Intake Manifold?

The timing chain should be included, I would think, but they only replaced the pistons and rings in mine so I can't say for sure. Intake manifold would probably be reused, I'm not sure about coils but I'd guess they'd be reused. Also I had it backwards; a long block includes a new head and a short block would reuse the old one.

I had a very similar situation back in 2011 with my 2009 a4. It started consuming a quart per oil change (5000 miles) around 70k and by the time I hit 90k it was a quart every 200 miles. It was early in the game for the B8 and audi wanted the engine back for engineering to inspect.

fast forward to today, I have 175k and my timing belt tensioner went, allowing the chain to jump time and wrecked the engine. Just put a 'new' engine with 30k on it. not cheap, if you're getting up there in mileage at least get the timing chain tensioner inspected for wear.

i have a 2011 a4 with almost 70k miles on it. I also have to refill 1 qt of oil every 5,000 miles on average. Friends told me that my exhaust relieve a white smoke everytime I take off or accelerate... Should I get worried? this thread is freaking me out. It is my first Audi so I am not familiar with this whole oil consumption issue. The only thing I have added to my car engine wise, is a Forge DV Spacer for the sound. Should I remove it before taking my car for maintenance service?

Keeping the Forge installed is a gamble; some dealerships will ignore the DV Spacer but some will try to blame anything they can on it.

Wow very impressive. This is one of the reasons why I wanted to get an Audi. I was sick and tired of the crappy and imcompetent service from the previous 2 brands I had.

@if6ws9 I live in new port richey FL, so I saw that you also go to Audi Reeves Tampa as well... Like you said on a previous post, they are pretty much Mod friendly, but most of the representatives over there are not very friendly. I guess I should remove it before I take it for maintenance and point them on what is wrong on my car... ugh what a pain to install/remove it tho lol
