    Trouble replacing control arms

    I cannot get the bolt on top of the upright holding the upper control arm ball joints to move. I've tried heating, hitting with a small sledge hammer, nothing will make it break loose. Any ideas or suggestions?
    It's the one in the top of the pic.

    Search "pinch bolt" for other options.

    Heat is probably your best bet.

    ah the dreaded pinch bolt. best advice is more heat, more hitting, and more PB blaster.

    air hammer and heat, I just used wd-40 on mine, but I'd heat it and spray it and watch it bubble in and heat it more in cycles, then blast it with the air hammer. Did this in about 15 min a side

    There are people who can get it out with pb blaster and there are people who need to heat it bright red (map gas torch) to get it to budge.

    One of mine came out fairly easy. The other one?
    It broke in three different pieces.

    Someone's literally took a part of the upright with theirs when it came flying out. I forget the thread name.

    Well I spent a couple hours on it yesterday, no luck.
    Back to the grind today, I'll try some more PB and heat this eve. and see what happens.

    Thanks for the replies, sounds like I'm doing what I can short of replacing the upright...

    Air hammer and chisel bit in the slots. Spread the slots, spray more pb blaster in slots. heat is your friend.

    Pull the whole strut assembly and take to a local machine shop with a 100 ton press. Best $15 I've ever spent.

    Lots of heat and an impact on the bolt head broke them free.

    For future reference, I always use MAP gas. I don't use the blue torches anymore. Go with the yellow. That is, if you hadn't been using that already.

    Also for future reference put a jack under that whole assembly and lift it up... don't put so much stress on the top control arms with the suspension hanging like that. Once you jack the knuckle up I bet you'll be able to get it out easy.

    Place anti-seize on your new pinch bolt before placing them in. Then anytime you have the opportunity, take it out and place more on. I do this on one side that I had work done on years ago. The other side is going to be a nightmare breaking free.

    Also, put a nut on the end of that bolt before whacking it with a hammer. You don't want to mushroom the tip.

    Do like the one guy said and take the whole thing out and use a press. You stand less of a chance of causing more damage that way. While heating will work, it will ultimately weaken the metal and there has been more than a few members who have broken the upright in just that spot. Then when you put it back in, use grease or something in there.

    I found that lots of PB blaster and an air hammer worked well for me, didn't have to use heat.

    The good ole' blue wrench is always your friend




    Another thing to try is a 50/50 acetone-ATF mix. It makes PB look like a little bitch.

    Also, on a somewhat related note, ATF is awesome for getting dirt and grease from under fingernails.

    I had to drill mine out. Probably the worst thing Ive had to do to my car. Replace with new, and smother in anti seize.

    haha you know that ATF can cause liver damage and other serious health problems just by coming into contact and absorbing into skin? Get a dollar store scrub brush, swipe it across a bar of soap and scrub your fingernails with that, it works great and has no chance of health disorders!

    But yes, ATF has awesome cleaning capabilities, for corrosion and it is the best carbon buildup breaker I have ever used.
