Is there a PN for the plastic guides or do I have to spend $200 on a new tensioner? I have a feeling the d/s front tensioner's chain guide is wearing out. I get a pretty loud chirping noise on start up that eventually goes away when oil temp gets to normal.

I'd honestly just replace the tensioner while your in there if that's what u think it really is.

You can get the guides individually. I'll see if I can dig up the link.

Edit: Had this window open too long. See infinikc's links.

    This.

If you're hearing the rattle on start-up, it's not the guide wearing out. It means the spring system inside the CCT is failing and not working correctly at low oil pressures. Eventually, the spring system will fail and your timing with go out of sync and you'll get a code. Then eventually the CCT will fail and you will get to do a head/engine rebuild.

Just pick up a used, working CCT and be done with it. The only way I would replace the guide is if you're 100% sure it's a worn guide causing the problem. Otherwise you'll have to get in there and replace the whole thing later.

I agree with Fourplay; generally if a guide has worn through, your CCT itself isn't far behind or may be causing the noise and the guide wear is just a result of that.

Typically I suggest the new guides when people either lose theirs after a motor build or something, or if one cracks (from dropping it, etc). But it is not an OEM part; according to Audi you must replace the whole thing. Just keep that in mind.

My neighbour had a lot of 3000 made. I was at his shop the other day asking about the guides, and he just reaches into this box on the shelf and grabs 4 and hands them to me.

I can inquire to see if he is willing to sell some.

I really hope he's intending to sell some. If not, he plans to drive the shit out of his car.

Thanks for the replies. The only thing that makes me think it's the guides wearing out or already broken is the metal on metal kind of sound. Not necessarily a rattle, as mentioned by Fourplay. However, I'm not one to do something like replace a part of a part, especially on something as important as a CCT. I was just curious if it was an option. Good to know that it is!

Anyhow, I did some looking around the engine bay today and I'm just going to take care of both CCT's and their respective seals, cam seals and half moons. Nothing was leaking when I last had the engine out, so I didn't bother. There are good enough deals out there on these things, anyway.
