As a home mechanic working alone on the floor, it will be too dangerous to remove the trans on its own, considering that you need to hold the engine from the top and dropping the subframe. Not to mention how tricky it is to access the mounting bolts. Re-installation will be another nightmare. Taking out the complete with the engine is much safer.
