Question 6 Quarts of Mag 1 Fully Synthetic Motor Oil for $27.61 on US Amazon - Anyone use it?

So I was checking out 5w-40 oils on Amazon today and came across this brand called "Mag 1". It's advertised as Fully Synthetic European motor oil and if you use Amazon's Subscribe & Save in the US it's less than $28 shipped for 6 quarts. Click here to check it out.

Anyone actually use this motor oil? They say it meets the VW 502.00 spec (though I don't see Mag 1 on Audi's list here) and is the recommended 5w-40 weight. The listing says it's (real) Fully Synthetic and no dino oil was used to make it.

My last free oil change from Audi was Pennzoil Ultra European and consumption was half a quart at 2,000 miles (not bad IMO considering regular 110°F+ temps). Now I'm running Motul 8100 X-Cess and consumption is virtually non-existent (though it is winter time and thus much cooler here in Arizona). I got the Motul for $43 shipped on Amazon.

This Mag 1 stuff is mighty tempting being so cheap! The boys over at BobIsTheOilGuy say it's a pretty solid oil. Here are the specs from Mag 1

When the product says "meets" vw standards, it is by their eyes. They think their product is good enough to meet vw standards.

When a product is approved, it means vw has tested it and has given the ok. For this oil, vw has not approved it. That's why you do not see it on the list.

But I glanced at the info sheet. A TBN of 9 is solid.

6 quarts > 4 quarts. You'd need to buy two jugs of T6 to properly do an oil change. 4.75 quarts is required (4.5L) if I recall correctly.

    That reminds me...

Sunday I was gonna try the t6 out. For the guys who purchase from Walmart do you buy 2 jugs or a jug and a seperate quart (if they even sell it by the quart)? It would be annoying to have to buy 2 jugs

I've only ever seen T6 sold in a gallon jug. That's all Walmart, O'Reilly, and Amazon have got listed as well.

Yea it's super annoying, but its not like you have to throw away the remnants of the second gallon so not a huge deal.

I swear I saw t6 quarts once. I was so stunned I forgot to buy an armful, haha.

    Rotella T6 > Castrol

I personally buy two gallons every few oil changes. It's actually the only thing I ever go into Walmart for.

But I was talking Mag 1, not Castrol.

I think I remember seeing a B5 or B6 A4 though with Castrol printed on the oil cap or some where near the filler? I guess Audi endorsed them at some point.

Audi oil caps do endorse Castrol. There are various threads on this topic and I can personally testify that since switching have noticed less oil consumption & cleaner looking oil at the same interval (5k).

Yeah, I thought that is what the dealer uses as well? May have to try the Castrol out after I run out of my Mobil1 stockpile...

My Walmart and most of the ones I've been to, have both quarts and 4qt jugs of Rotella. I usually get 1 jug plus a quart.

My walmart has the big jugs AND the individual quarts of T6, I have used it for 90% of my oil changes however, this past oil change I used Castrol Edge because it was on sale. I honestly can't tell a difference and don't see how anyone could. I will more than likely go back to T6.

I found out my Walmart does indeed have quart bottles of T6, they keep them completely separate off in the motorcycle and ATV section. Kind of odd they'd put the gallon jug of T6 on the same shelf with other automotive oils and then hide the quart bottles on the other side of the department. Still, it's more economical to simply buy 2 gallons jugs even though that'll leave a lot of extra.

I've still got some Pennzoil to finish off which I bought in bulk with a rebate. And I still plan to stock up on Mag 1 since it's so cheap right now. T6 seems to have held a stable price for a long time. I plan to use it when I can't get other brands of 5w-40 for cheap.
