    Having lots of trouble removing HPFP with soft lines

    I'm trying to tackle a cam follower replacement for the first time on my '08 which has the rubber line rather than the banjo bolt. After getting everything loose, when I pull back on the pump I can't get the rubber line/barb to clear the hard fuel line that runs behind it. I can pull the pump out a bit, but not far enough to clear it out of the hole in the head. I am reluctant to bend and angle the pump too much.

    If I twist the pump a little bit counter clockwise it looks like it may get by, but then the large sensor (gray connector) hits the hard coolant line. Any harm in removing this sensor from the pump? I think if I took of the big sensor/sender off the pump, I may be able to twist the pump enough to get it out. But. I haven't read of anyone using this method. Thoughts?

    You don't need to take off the sensor. It is a tight fit but you can squeeze it out and back in with the line connected. Though I usually pull the line off of the hard line barb when remomonvong the pump, before pulling the pump out. Funny thing is it is easier to reconnect the flex kine to the hard line before putting the rid back on the cam followers hole when reinstalling. This is because you have more space to push it back on the barb. Remember that the barbed design prevent you from just pulling on the line to get it off; the harder you pull the tighter it grips the barbs (think Chinese finger trap). So to get it off you remove the clamp then push on the end of the tube with a thick head screwed driver or some other blunt tip object, at the same time pulling on and twisting the tube to get it to let go of the barb. Go to Autozond and get a stew type high pressure fuel line hose clamp and usd this even you put it back on, and next time will be a lot easier.

    That hose clamp is not the standard worm gear, it has a little flap of metal protecting the hose from the screw, so specifically ask for high pressure fuel line hose clamp.

    Eric, do you have pics of this, I'm not 100% on what you're saying. Did you replace the flex line and the fitting on the hpfp? Any photos of what you're referring to?

    So the suggestion is to remove the soft line here, right?



    Ok, so lame question.. To do this, I assume I need to use a pair of needle nose pliers squeezing on the little tab on the far left and the big tab on the far right, then push it down the hose?

    Then push the hose back onto the barb and twist and the pull back?

    That space is so tight. This is a major pain in the ass. I was hoping that I could pull the pump out a bit and get the one on the pump, but no dice. :/

    Ok, so I've got the clamp back, but how the f*ck do you get a good grip on the hose to do anything to it.

    Do you use your hands somehow? Mine don't fit. Or, use a tool to grip it? I'm afraid of damaging the line.

    F*ck ya.



    So I took a break and came back to it. I didn't twist the line at all to get it off the barbed connector. I just eased it off by pushing the end with a screwdriver in as many places as I could. Once it got going, it became a lot easier.

    Hopefully getting it back on the barb will be easier.

    I'm planning on tackling this job early next month, and wasn't sure how to deal with non-banjo hpfp. Great thread!

    Can you replace the oem clamp with a worm style clamp?

    There are special clamps for fuel lines. I picked some up this afternoon and plan on replacing the oem clamps with them. They look like worm clamps but the screw is on the outside.

    Our fuel lines have a 5/8" inner diameter. So get clamps for that size. I picked up these from Pepboys.

    I actually looked into the same clamps

    Looks like they provide a very wide pressure point vs the worm style clamps

    Btw, if you aren't replacing the hpfp, you can pull it out with the flex line still on it. I've done that before when changing the cam follower. In my case, I'm actually replacing my hpfp.
