Manual 6 spd transmission - fluid change

I want to change the fluid in the 6 spd (01E IIRC) manual transmission of my 2002 Allroad.
Just checked Bentley, but they only show 4.2l V8 with trans cooler and 2.7T without trans cooler (7mm below hole or so).
I have 2.7T with trans cooler (yup!).

    a) where is the drain plug (if someone knows off hand: size of Allen socket)?
    b) where is fill plug (ditto Allen size)?
    c) what is the correct level

While at it, may also check or change the rear diff fluid; check/fill and drain plug location? Level?
01 Allroad Tiptronic, TCU tune, mild stg 3 (350 HP) tune (stock injectors) KraftwerkTurbo TM1. Lower, Wider. Custom tip vent pod with Podi
02 Allroad 6 spd, Kraftwerk Turbo TM6, 750cc, 3" MAF, piggy, FMIC, CM stg 5 (hate). 30 psi at 3600 rpm. Needs stronger rods (coming).

All 01E's have a plug in the middle of the trans, the fil-plug should be near the speed sensor on the driver side axle.

with the car level, drain and then fill until fluid slowly dripps from the fill plug.

I want to say it's a 17mm allen but it's been so long I may be thinking about the rear diff plug. it's either that or 10mm.

    Thanks juve021, very helpful.
On the 6 spd tranny, there seem to be TWO drain plugs in the very bottom, one towards the rear (slimmer part of tranny), one to the front.

I want DRAIN the tranny fluid and refill using Redline MT85 (MT-85 75W85 GL-4, should be similar to the common practice of mixing 2 parts MT90 and MTL (I assume MT85 only became available recently).

Ditto: rear diff: Drain, and refill with Redline 75W90NS GEAR OIL 1-QT GL5

Yes you are correct about the 2 plugs. Those instructions are just for checking. For draining, as I understand you open up both plugs and fill using the one by the driver's side axle(front one).

Oh and pretty sure rear diff plug is 10mm allen. Not sure about tranny plugs.

Remove both drain plugs, fill using fill. All either 10mm, 14mm, or 17mm allen, but I think they're 17. There may be other considerations since your Allroad 6-speed is equipped with a cooler that could hold an additional quart. Are you looking at the instructions for Allroad, specifically?

    From other post:

    01E 6 spd gearbox:

Without cooler: 4 mm +/-1 mm below overflow.
With cooler: 9 mm +/- 1 mm below overflow.

    Allroad: 9 mm +?- 1 mm below

NO MENTION OF COOLER OR NOT (or do all Allroad have a cooler?).

    Mine is a 2002 Allroad 6 spd.

DO NOT USE REDLINE especially in cold climate. It will make you tranny hard shift and miss synchros. Use original audi fluid part# G070726A2 (newest spec) or G052911A2 (older spec). This can be bought for what you'll pay for redline junk at http://www.audionlineparts.com/

Look at the tranny, it is has two hard lines going to it on passenger side then you have a cooler, if not, you don't. AFAIK all allroads have coolers though.
    Cheers.

    Julex,
I was just going to pass along the same information on Redline at cold temps. The stuff is crap (even the MTL). Sometimes, aftermarket is NOT better, and gear oil is one of those times--best to stick with the OEM synthetic in cold temps. Please note that your rear 'dif' will require a slightly different OEM G052 145 S2 (superseded A2).

Sure wish I had the 6MT, this allroad is the first A/T I have ever owned. I feel so disconnected.

Is fluid drain & fill recommended? If so, at what mileage? Just picked up an 03 allroad w/6 speed 89k miles.

Audi recommends a lifetime fill which is bogus. I recommend a drain and fill ever 50K using the factory stuff of the Fuchs sinto fluid I sell, it's a direct cross to the factory fluid and is in the price range of most of the aftermarket fluids.

    Titan Fuchs Sinto Fluid

I also recommend filling the trans to just below the fill port, the extra fluid will do the box good.

Scotty, I have Redline in right now, but not happy with the shift (or maybe the synchro rebuild I had sent my tranny out for wasn't done that well).
Want to go the safe side now. Can link me to your fluids (type and quantity) I need for a complete 2002 Allroad 6 spd tranny drain and fill?

I did NOT touch the rear axle diff (180k). You may include your recommendation for that as well.

    Fuchs Fluid at AAM.

    http://advancedautomotion.com/shop/p...roducts_id/139

Allroad trans takes either 3 or 4 liters depending on the trans code. There is about 1/2 liter still in the lines and radiator so you may want to consider flushing it. Rear diff is .95 liters if I am not mistaken.

I'm planning on changing out the manual trans and rear diff fluid in my 2001 A6 2.7T, so I was looking around for any info on procedures and torque values etc. to use, and found a great video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fBcVz1El9Y. The video is for a B5 S4, and doesn't mention anything about the different fluid capacities for a trans with a cooler, but it does go into nice detail including where the drain is for the center diff. The first part of the video is on changing the engine oil, but the trans and diff oil change procedure starts at 7'30". - Jim
