Was I supposed to get the backup camera?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have a 2012 Premium Plus with Nav. Was the backup camera system supposed to come with the Nav pkg, or was that a seperate option? One of my friends with a B8 A4 said that as a result of the Tsunami in Japan, they were short on some parts for the backup cameras, so they shipped some cars without it. Then the dealership was to let me know that and have it installed when parts were re-supplied. Does that sound right, or just wishful thinking?

Not sure about your car, but I can confirm there was a chip problem with the camera for MY12 Audi's. We had to wait a few months for the chip after getting my wife's 2012 Q5. However, they should all be done by now. Somehow my dealer didn't tell us either and then apologized when we asked. In our case, we noticed right away because my wife really wanted that camera. It was a bit irritating, so I think your thought is far from wishful thinking.

The dealership should DEFINITELY have let you know. If the specs say you should have a camera, I'd ask, because it was an issue with deliveries in mid to late 2011 and it wouldn't surprise me if the dealer didn't tell you.

Check your sticker. It it says "Camera Prep" then you need to go to dealer and they will install the control module. Also check your tailgate by the license plate. If it has the tiny camera you probably just need to have the module installed.

Camera prep was basically Audis way of telling you that the camera is included with your car, however due to supply issues stemming from the incident in Japan we are currently not able to provide full functionality at the time of build.

Same thing happened to a bunch of VW models. I recall there being one year (2012) of the VW CC being without the backup camera.

I'm looking at my sticker. Doesn't say backup camera on it anywhere. The real question I am trying to ask is, is the backup camera suposed to be part of the NAV Plus system? Edit: It is included with the NAV Plus for My13, but that is also about $1K more. I paid $2000 for Nav Plus, it is now $3050.

However, I don't have a backup camera installed. Are you all are saying I should have one?

The easiest way to check was stated by "Jones2012s4 "

Just check the rear license plate holder for the camera. If your car was suppose to have the rear camera feature then there will be a rear camera (this is the "camera prep").
The tsunami delayed electronics module is not the camera themselves.

If you do have the camera and need to have the electronics installed by the dealer, remember to ask for the $200 AOA gift card that was sent to many of us owners as a thank you for being so patient (this was a really nice touch by AOA, and something that I would never expect since the Tsunami tragedy was not caused by any fault of Audi) but If by some slim chance that you should have received the module then you definitely deserve the AOA cash...

I'm like 90% sure on the US models, you need to get either Prestige Package, and/or Driver Assist package. Premium Plus trim line does not come with it even if you select just the Nav option. I'm speaking for MY10-12 only as the MY13 models "Driver Assist" package is now much different and the backup camera comes default with the Navigation package this time around.

I have a 12 PP with Nav... It has a camera. The tsunami thing is accurate. Your dealer should have told you.

If you have Prem+ w the Nav option and you have rear sensors, then yes, you are supposed to have had the camera chip retrofit.
Just call up your dealer, they'll prob ask for your VIN and they'll schedule the install.

I second the contacting AoA for the Gift Card!

In later 2012 models, Audi broke up the nav and camera/parking sensors into tiered packages. The original pkg was $2500 for nav including camera/sensors. Later, it became $2000 for nav with the option to add camera/sensors for an extra $550. Sounds like OP got a car that was ordered without the $550 camera option.

If you have parking sensors, your car is wired for a camera and only needs the chip installed. If you don't have sensors, then you don't get a camera (nor were you or the original owner charged for one).

This sounds like the most accurate description of where my car lands. I have no sensors and no camera installed. No mention of a camera or sensors anywhere on the sticker. Sorta sucks. Drove a loaner with it and it is kinda cool.

Interesting, I never knew they decoupled those options. Sucks tho.

I was backing up the other night and for some reason the camera never activated. I've become so accustomed to having the camera show up in my Nav screen I found myself wondering why I couldn't see behind me, then I had to make a conscious effort to turn around and look over my shoulder - it was a weird experience...

I had the same experience. Took my GF's A4 to get pizza the other night and didn't realize how used to my back up camera I had become. It was weird that it didn't pop up on the NAV screen and I had to turn around and look where I was going. No parking sensors on her car either which I also have gotten used to. #firstworldproblems
