I was thinking of using carb cleaner when i do mine. Should work just as good with soft wire brushes and rags.

Brake cleaner works fine for this or just some good ol gasoline let sit over night then scrub also you should change the oil, you will get some left over in there especially when you start the car again.

You can try bgfindashop.com to find local places in your area who sell BG products. It searches by zip code. This can be an alternative if shipping is too high when buying online or the shipping time is too long and you need the product right away.

    Excellent DIY!
Have a quick question for Dan_Q.
I'm working on a mod and since you have already dissected these parts. I could really use your help. What is this hose fitting is used for? When I first noticed this fitting, I was scratching my head wondering if someone forgot to hook up a hose.

I think if you look into it you'll see that doesn't have a hole into the interior of the manifold. Not sure why the hell it is there but nothing needs to be connected to it. Perhaps Audi was planning to add a feature they could connect which would fail shortly after the warranty ended, then later reconsidered since the car already had plenty of features meeting that criteria???

Quick question. Did this problem start after you did the intake valves cleaning or have you had this issue before? Just wondering. Ive read thru your write up again. I just got my car back from stealership and they told me that this is the reason my car threw the code P0420.

Did this cleaning last weekend took me a few hours longer but that's because I was in a rush putting back together, first I forgot the flaps after I connected everything back, so had to take it all apart again, then the second time I forgot to put one of the injector spacers that fell of when took the manifold of the first time, but all in all it went great car definitely feels smoother now. Here are some pics, of before was to pissed to take the after...

No, everything looked good, just take your time and examine everything, another thing to mention is be VERY careful with the little nipples for the vacuum hoses because if the plastic is cold they brake like chips... I learned the hard way...

Thanks for the tip. Last stupid question. Did yours have a 10mm triple square bolt or 9mm? Im doing mine tomorrow and i could only find 8, 10, 12mm sizes. Hopefully mine got a 10mm.

I didn't have a triple square but I managed to use a regular Allen key, I don't remember the size but that bolt isn't torqued down that much so it was easy to get it off

B8 A4 2.0 TFSI DIY: Carbon Intake Valve Cleaning

Just got done doing it today. This DIY helped a lot. Took me less than 20 mins to get the manifold off then about 4 hrs for cleaning. My car has 61k+ miles and i highly doubt the 1st owner did anything to it.

You cant even see the inside since its so caked up with junk!

I only got to take a pic pf the progress. It was already too dark for me to take pics of the final result.

Really glad i did this and thanks for all the help from everybody here.

I'm about to tackle this project along with a new manifold on my '09 A4 with 64K on it. What chemical solvent did you use to clean the valves?

^I just used some CRC carb cleaner and lots and lots of scraping and wiping. I used about 3 cans. Do yourself a huge favor and use a flexible wire brush thats small enough to get around the valves and make sure you do a really good blow out with an air compressor before you start putting everything together. Goodluck!

    Need help.
My goal is replace water pump and per Dan’s recommended procedure the intake manifold has to be removed to gain access. I followed all the steps in the manifold DIY but the manifold will not come off. It is loose and wiggles a lot. It can lift up of the about a 1/16 off the head. I even removed the Throttle Valve Control Module to get a better view. Something on the bottom side in the middle is holding it. Not firm like a bolted joint but loose like a sheet metal tab or hose. I am pulling hard but have not yet resorted to a crowbar to gain leverage. I read that several of you did the manifold cleaning DIY. Did you to use huge force or I am missing something?
    Thanks

Note an 8mm hex will work as a substitute for a M9 triple square for low torque situations

There's only a few bolts and nuts holding it on. Theres also the bracket that attaches to the bottom of the throttle body that would definitely keep you from pulling it out. It needs to be removed completely.

The last thing I remember was pulling up/out with a bit of force due to two of the injectors deciding they'd rather stay in the block.

Great DIY, dan. thank you for sharing!

I have a cel that vcds has indicated as an intake manifold problem, so I am using this guide as instruction on getting the faulty IM removed. I have had no trouble up until this point, but I *cannot* get the lower two connectors removed. Is there some kind of trick to remove them, or could they be fused?

See the little boxes on top of each connector? You need to pull slightly on the little protrusion to disengage a clip that holds the two connector ends together. You will hear a little click when you do it and they will just slide apart. Because of the angle your best bet is to use a pick that is curved at the end. Good luck.

I just used a flat head screwdriver, put it right there in between and twisted a bit to release. .idk if that is right or you shouldn't do that but I have not broken a tab doing like so...give it a try maybe it will come off for you

Thank you for the suggestions! It kind of helped me to understand the mechanics of the connectors. Although I broke one of them slightly, I did manage to get them both off with this new information. Such a relief!

If I manage to get this all pulled apart, I'll post pics of an uncleaned IM @ ~77k :P

DJ, that kit is the updated version. The earlier style had a white "plastic washer" with barbs on it (at least mine did). It sat in the pocket machined in the head. Is that what you're referring to?

Btw, this is all that's avilable between the rail and the head besides the injector itself:

Best to replace the components with that new kit if you already have it. Brittle little shits huh? I honestly don't see how not running those white ones would hurt anything short accelerating possible corrosion issues...
