It was around between the first and the second piston from the front.
Yea that is common when dealing with aftermarket head studs/bolts. One was a little tight with my studs, but not bad enough for me to worry about it. Glad it was an easy fix and ended up working for you.

As for decking the block. next time just go for it, it assures a nice flat finish for your gasket and any type of added compression is added powa. I was going to really up my compression with that head and E85, but never got around to it.

Actually, after talking from the guys at 4 season tuning, if you're planning on throwing a set of cams like the CAT 3658's or the IE EV-1's I'd be careful. I was told that decking the head can get you pretty close to valve contact. Maybe it's not a problem if the shop takes the bare minimum off, but if the head is flush, I'd leave it alone personally.

Well I got the engine fired up... but, I am having issues with my cooling system. I am not sure if my new thermostat is bad or not? But I don't think any coolant is circulating. The oil temp goes up but absolutely flat with the coolant temp. The hoses feel cold too. I am going to pull the thermostat tomorrow and switch it out with the old one and see what happens. I guess it could be the green switch in the back being bad too. Opinions?

Also lucky me, my xenon lights don't work either. No clue how they could be bad, they worked just fine before I upgraded to the Mini Moto ones. So I have to take those apart and see what is going on. Hopefully it is something stupid like unplugged balasts.

Well I got everything buttoned back up and I took the car for a drive for the first time in 6 months. It feels great. It pulls like a freight train now with the GTRS. I was on a stock tune prior to this so it really does make a difference. I can only imagine what it would be like with my FMIC and a 3in Exhaust. Both of which are the next on my list of things to buy.

Right now I am having issues with warm starts. I already replaced my coolant temp sensor (the green one in the back between the engine and the fire wall). So I am pretty sure that is not the issue. I am also having erratic idle every so often. So now I need to track down what is causing both of those things. Any ideas or suggestions?

Also, is it normal for the APR diverter valve to sound like a blow off valve. This thing is really loud. Not that it is a deal breaker, but I was under the impression that it would not be this loud. I wonder if it is bad?

I am running the Uni 630 file that I got from another member. AF seems to be fine. But I will check the numbers later. I can't remember off my head what they are. Regardless, its hard to tell what AF is doing on start up if I am not correct.

If you're running a cone filter with the APR R1 on your bt set up. Its probably pretty loud. That thing was loud enough to hear on my k03 at highway speeds. Yours has to sound badass

It sounds like a blow off valve. I do have a KN cone filter. It must be sending the sound back through the cone. Psssssshh

If your diverting the air back into the intake without a stock air filter it is going to be loud, hell mine was louder than my friend's actual blow off valve on his WRX and all I had was the R1 DV and the carbonio intake. But right now I'm back on the stock intake and filter set up so you can barely even here the R1 or the turbo spool like I had with the aftermarket filter.

Update on the car. All is running absolutely smoothly. Perfect daily driver, always starts always runs. I might take my cone filter off and put the airbox back on to reduce the sound. My S4 seats work like a charm and feel sooooo much better than the crap A4 seats. The dual hi low Xenon lights are amazing and I can not recommend Mirimoto enough. Still got to mount my FMIC. I have been lazy and have had other money priorities. I just turned back my timing and boost is set to 18lbs. It does the job and the girl friend is already pissed at the car for being like my persona fun park ride. Hey... watch this....zooooommmmm

I am not sure what the paint is. I know its engine paint I bought at an autoparts store. Its a metalic gold of sorts. If I find the can, I will post it up.

Good news calamity averted. Seems the gasket between the manifold and the turbo was jacked. Time to throw the old 150K one back in. After market parts.... sigh. I have bought too many parts twice. Don't EVER buy after market rear coolant flanges or thermostat flanges. Ask me how I know... just spend the extra 20 bucks and buy from the dealer.

Got the gasket changed out and that fixed my problem. I just went right down to the VW dealer and bought a stock gasket. Hopefully it lasts longer than the aftermarket one that lasted 1 year.

I got the CXRacing FMIC mounted. That was a pain in the ass and still not totally done. Apparently the hot side piping does not play well with a GTRS. I had to cut the silicon hose that connects dirrectly to the turbo cutting 3/4 off each side. I then had to cut the hot side pipe in half and take out a 1 inches amount of aluminum and use some spare silicon hose from the original plumbing to bridge the cut. I could weld it later, but I am going to hold off on that till I get the Treadstone intercooler mounted up in a few months. I will post picks tomorrow.

The same has to be done with the racetec fmic. Seems to be common with the elim setups. I just bought a turbo to amigos gasket from ATP. Should I not even bother with it and go get an oem one? The 5 bucks I spent on it isn't worth the hassle if it's junk.

After dealing with a lot of gasket problems, just go what is tried and proven. OEM for eliminator. Even cometic is junk.

Thought I would update this with what I did recently (2 weeks ago). I ordered the pipe kit from CXRacing for my 2001 A4 1.8t. They messed up and sent me the whole intercooler setup. Score for me. I already own the Treadstone 1.8T intercooler that Seerlah (Mitch) helped sheppard into being. Thanks Mitch for taking initiative and helping the community by getting that core created.

Since I received the full CXRacing FMIC setup, I figured I might as well give it a try. Besides its winter and the ambient temp is pretty low. Its not like I am trying to cool stuff with 100 deg heat. My impressions of the CXRacing kit is pretty good. For the price point, it is an amazing deal. I would have no problem recommending it to anyone with a Franken Turbo or K04. Its built well, uses decent internal ribbing cooling, the aluminum tubes were welded well and fit, the hose clamps are top notch quality too.

In order to mount this system to my car, I had to cut it and mod it. I am running a GTRS turbo and the hot side is differently located than a Ko3 borg warner. I had to cut about 1.5 inches out of the hot side and add a silicon bridge to it to make it work. I cut that from some of the older tubing which was removed. In the future I plan to buy some more replacement 2in and 2.5 in tubing with a flex hump to make it even better. Plus I need 2 more good clamps. For now the whole system is working great. I plan to pull the CXRacing core and use the piping kit parts to mount up to the Treadstone core. Of course I will have to go to town and cut the stock bumper core up to fit that. I will post pics of that later. For now this is what I did. I also spaced out the bumper shocks about 3/8 of an inch with washers to fit the CXRacing core. Notice how I wrapped those washers in tape. That little trick saved some stress.

Looks pretty nice. My racetechbpipes had to be cut the same way. Think you could have gone above the ac lines?

With those hotside pipes, there is no way to go above the AC lines as they come. It is debatable if I can in the future using a flex joint hump hose and other tricks. I will have to go over them when I mount my Treadstone. So we shall see in 3 months or so. I have to buy this and a 2.5 inch and see.

Good luck with the mounting of the TR18T. Having it on my car is proof that it can fit behind the stock bumper with fog lights and grills. Hardest part will be keeping the fog lights. Poopie did all the fabbing for me, but he had me cut the bumper using a flapper wheel for where ABS plastic needed trimming and a cutting wheel for the rebar in case you want to know the easy tools to use. Good luck!

I tend to use an angle grinder to cut plastic. Mmmmmm burning plastic smell. Its crude, but it gets the job done. I had to shave a ton from the lower valence on the bumper to get the CXRacing kit to mount up. I was on a time schedule and I knew the Treadstone would need more time than I had to give. Weather came in fast. Sadly even the CXRacing kit took more time than anticipated making it fit and I ended up finishing it all the next day after the temp dropped a ton and just before the snow came barreling in.

I will take some, but right now the car is covered in snow. We just had a small storm.

I take it the person who got caught under the semi didn't make it? That looked rather brutal.

Latest car work involves many new additions to the car. I just picked up some smoked chrome gauge rings from Ebay.

Changed out the front brake pads and rotors. No more wharped pulsation.

I then recieved my new Depo headlight bodies and had to make new brackets for my Mirimoto Mini dual xenon projector assemblies (can not recommend enough).

I was then surfing the local craigslist when this popped up. The paint is all sorts of F'ed up. Guy claims the car baked in the Arizona sun for 2 years before he started to part it out. I am sanding off all the paint. Lots or work to be done. But I have an S4 bumper on the way.

I also picked up an S4 grill which i painted flat black and mounted to the car.

Does the CXRacing intercooler fit without trimming the bumper much? (A4 bumper)
