Brand new inner cv boot with 50 miles on it torn again, WTF?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Why would this happen? Defective boot perhaps? This isn't the first time I replace a CV boot. My old boot was torn for a couple of months before I decided to replace it. Bought an OEM replacement to make sure it will last a good amount of time and yet after only 50 miles it has a tear in it and my car smokes like a chimney from the grease getting on my downpipe. Has anyone had a similar experience?
My car is lowered but not to the ground or anything close to that. I can fit a finger between the front fender and my tire.

I have another new boot I will have to put on this weekend and hopefully it will last longer.

Do you have the shield on the transmission right above the axle? Maybe it is heat causing them to fail?

What's your gtf? Have done any high speed runs? And like above are your heat shields on? Either of these things could cause your boots to fail prematurely. Ask me how i know..

Be sure the not isn't twisted at all when you install, also. That could be the issue.

Also, as stated above, be sure theres a heat shield.

The heat shield is definitely on, especially on that side. The other side doesn't have the shield at the moment because I had to remove my wideband o2 sensor and the shield is in the way. I'll put it back on this weekend. This side has always had the shield on though. The boot wasn't twisted from what I remember and plus the smaller end of it is free rotate around the axle shaft so I am not sure how it can remain twisted after a couple of minutes. It is torn right in on one of the more central bends too, not somewhere close to the metal part. It is really strange, almost as if someone just made a 2 inch cut with a razor.

Haven't measured it lately but I think when I was adjusting my height I made it 24.5 or 24.75, I have to check. No real high speed runs, at least nothing over 100 and since I put the new boot on definitely nothing over 85.

I would guess that it's likely due to the car being lowered. I have had this problem as well.

I agree with Dutchsider. Both my front outers are torn and one of them was replaced less than 3 months ago. I'm beginning to think lowering is not worth the related issues that go along with it.

Maybe not your issue, but when my motor mounts broke and snub cage was missing (body shop morons), the engine movement caused the inner boots to rip off, either by hitting the heat shield, or stress, I never figured it out.

What were your broken motor mount symptoms? I know for sure my snub mount is good.

Missing a snub cage caused some more major issues immediately, like the fan blades getting pushed into the radiator, etc., so I couldn't tell you the symptoms of just the broken side motor mounts themselves.

Too much grease can also cause the boot to break

My engine mounts are good and my snub cage/mount are all there for sure.
Still a mystery to me but I will replace it today and see what happens. Perhaps I did put too much grease in there, who knows. I just used the pack that came with the boot, that shouldn't be too much, you would think.
