well it was last september when i started building my motor. after aquiring all the parts finally, it is time to install everything else. so here goes...

    i will be putting this

    and these

    into this

    2001tqm Parts List-
06a AUG block out of a passat
    Stock aeb head
    Mahle PowerPak pistons at 81.25mm
    Unbranded rods
    Kolbenschmidt bearings
    Integrated Engineering Manual tbelt conversion
    RAI kevlar tbelt
    GT2871r Turbo
    ATP Downpipe
    Stern Motor Mounts
Custom 3 inch exhaust going to autozone muffler
Forge 001 BOV and Forge boost controller
    ATP Fuel Rail
    Treadston TR11 Intercooler
    Ebay piping kit
    Walbro 255 fuel pump
    ECS Tuning AFPR
    ATP Fuel Pressur Regulator Adapter
    Siemens 630 injectors
ECS ra4 clutch conversion with s4 disk. May buy rs4 disk, or something better
    Other stuff I am forgetting

I will be going maestro. I dont have the program yet, but i am still waiting on some parts, so ill pick it up next week. I am having a graduation party tomorrow at my house, so ill be taking the motor out monday after i clean up. I will be performing all the emissions deletes on this (thanks walkytalky for the writeup) and i am also taking out the a/c. yeah i know its a bad decision, but i never use it and i want more intercooler room. I was thinking about an electric fan, but i may save that for another time. the car will appear stock on the outside, but the engine bay should be nice. i made sure to get black ic piping, and i painted the ic black too. I am making this thread so I can ask and answer questions all in one thread. i guess you could say its a "build" thread if you wanna attach a name to it. so, until monday, id like to hear opinions and advice. but next week i will be doing all the work myself. good thing i am unemployed so i should be able to get this done in a week. i just need the rest of my parts through the mail and to pick up maestro. if all goes well this will be running next saturday

1: Is this your first build?
2: How much have you invested so far?
3: What are your plans for this car?
4: Why the 28 series for your turbo?
5: Which autozone muffler? are you going to change it later?
    6: Was the build hard?
Sorry theres so many Qs im just making sure i get some great info before i start mine

i did have a build thread here, but i didnt get much interest. heres the link to my engine build thread on audiforums http://www.audiforums.com/forum/b5-m...-build-174351/

    1. Yes, first build. Car is mostly stock currently
    2. I have receipts, but i would guess around $4000. i got a hell of a deal on some of the parts, but i think around $2500 into just the motor
    3. Plans are to just make it run good. not gonna be a show car, not gonna be a race car. I just wanted to make it faster, and might drag it or autox once or twice
    4. 28 series cause i got a deal like i said. $1000 for used turbo, downpipe, oil and coolant lines, fuel rail, borla exhaust, and some other stuff. hell of a deal that i couldnt pass up, but i will go bigger some day
    5. its a thrush brand muffler. off the top of my head i think the number is 17661 but not positive. it was only 40$. if its too loud, ill resonate it. but i had the ehaust shop bend 3 inch to match the borla i got with the turbo, which was only 2.25 inch, so too small. think i got under $200 into the exhaust, and practically gave my borla away for $250.
    6. so far, i wouldnt say it was hard. i actually love talking apart motors and rebuilding them. i view it as fun. plus, my landlord owns a diesel shop a half mile away from my house, so i did a lot of work there. kinda comes in handy, but ill be doing the motor swap in my garage, besides the exhaust which needs to be pieced in. ill use their hoist and welder.

dont worry about the questions. just kinda nice i finally have something neat to add to this site.

would you say it was easier to just buy a separate motor and build it on the side?

without a doubt yes. so much eaiser and limited downtime. you can find a motor cheap somewhere. mine was $250, so not too much more money. plus, you can then sell your running engine once you get the built one running. i probably wont, but the option is always there. plus, if you can do like i did and get a longblock plus a bunch of accesories, you can sell what you dont need. i sold the stock turbo, exhaust manifold and stuff, plus i got a bunch of exra parts.

my thoughts exactly. im not much for crazy exterior paints on wheels and stuff. im more of an oem plus look kinda guy. but under the hood, anything goes. the color is actually off a 2007 chrysler called snake skin green. if i was more of a flamboyant person, id paint the whole car that color.

i got pretty hammered at my grad party last night, so work on the car didnt start until 4pm this afternoon. i am going to go take some more shit off, but i think this is a pretty good start for today. and sorry for picture quality. my phone normally takes great photos.

i got my injectors in the mail today too. thanks mike hood. waiting on my motor mounts and fuel pressure regulator, which should be here this week some time. i probably wont be doing much work tomorrow because i picked up a shingling job, but i want to get to the point of being able to pull my motor. i got $800 for my grad party, ironically the same price as maestro so ill have to go down to stellar autowerks to purchase that soon. still gotta pick up a bunch of bolts and whatnot from the dealership, but im still thinking by saturday it should be running

yeah its a t25. i kinda wanted to go bigger, but i couldnt since i got since a deal on the stuff. im debating my first initial upgrade, whether it be going t3 and external wastegate, or going bigger. but for know i just wanna get this setup going

progress today was slim. us four guys finished a 12 square roof by five tonight, but i had too much other stuff to do so i didnt start on the car till after 8pm. got the tubo out, and the alternator and power steering pump. i drained the oil and put the car on ramps so i can access the bellhousing bolts and stuff. i may get the motor pulled tomorrow if i can get my buddy and a lull down to my house. progress pics tomorrow.

You really should have placed in some cheap Osvat exhaust valves, before assembling. Relatively cheap and proven solid exhaust valve. Anyways, hope things go smooth once she fires up .

And from personal experience (which you are about to encounter), do it right the first time around. This is in regards of what you want to do next, after stepping up from the T25 flange. Either go full tubular T3 top mount with a different turbo (or simply swap out exhaust housings to save on initial cost and pick up an EWG that will more than likely be your last one ever needed for this vehicle) or a V-Band setup (Pag Parts bottom mount, or ATP side mount). If I could do it all over again, I would have gone tubular top mount from the start. When you look at those higher priced, higher quality, etc units you wish you could afford...wait it out and just save for it. Kick myself in the *** everytime I think about it.

Aaron the T3 is also offered in a internal wg housing, that is the Ford 5 bolt which uses a WG plate on the back of it.

Going to be a solid build!

If you do decide to go T3 and change your set up, im actually getting rid of my ATP (t3) mani with an external 38mm tial wastegate.

i really would go t3 right off, but im just trying to get this setup running first. i believe i will have zero issue making a return on my money for what i paid for the turbo, manifold, and downpipe. if i had to pay for new everything, i would have gone a bit bigger. as far as the valves go, i have been kicking myself in the ass about not getting solid exhaust valves. im not gonna push the car super hard or anything. but im hoping by the end of the summer ill have enough to build the head, at which time valves will go in. maybe some cams and springs too so i can get it all done at once.

but i need some advice on purchasing the maestro program. i talked to the dealer in minnesota, and he said he cant bench flash my ecu. i will need to physically bring the car down there. i have two options with that. either trailer it down to plymouth, mn, about an hour away, and waste a bunch on gas and the whole burden of doing it, or run my chipped ecu and stock injectors, which sounds like a bad idea to me. either way, i think im going to have to pick up a wideband gauge. i was hoping the base file would be good enough to get away without a wideband, but it seems like a much safer route. the other option to get my ecu tuned would be to send it to canada, which i dont like the sound of either. i dont want to pay extra for shipping and have to deal with customs, but it might be the easiest option.

either way, this is now aparent that it wont be break in ready by this weekend :( not happy about that, but its my fault for not researching the tune well enough and how to get it. i got some more work to do like take the a/c, but ill post pics of progress in a few hours.

its actually an awm valve cover. i never got an aug cover with the motor. i got an aeb valve cover with the head i bought, but i purchased an awm cover for the extra breather port. figured it would be better for engine ventilation. but as you can tell it is definately not a regular awm cover. i did some significant grinding off of unneccesary castin bits and thread towers. did the same with my manifold. a little buffing and painting afterwords and it now looks pretty good. that was the advantage of doing a slow build. i had such a long time frame i didnt mind doing little stuff like smoothing out the valve cover even though its simply for aesthetics. but that pain certainly wasnt cheap. 70$ a quart. but the advantage is the leftover i have can just be put into a spray bomb for easy painting of smaller items

I removed the splash guard on my valve cover. If your intake cam still has the plastic splash gaurd on them, no oil will get out. Makes for better breathing. Picked up that tip from the B6 section, where someone kept getting leaks on his VC gasket with the same setup as you. Said he removed the guard on the VC, and no more leaking.

And year is your car (really want to know what ECU box)?

AUG cover has the oil cap located at the back end of the cover.

I have been running without the intake cam splash cover for years without any issues and I have a catch can line on the back of my VC.

funny thing. i never put the splash guard back in. they were all sludged up and i dint feel like they were really necessary. didnt know removing them was better. i just figured that lots of other ohc motors dont have them, so ill keep mine out.

and my apologies on forgetting the year. its an 01, so ch box (ill update the first post). i will be mafless, and deleting pcv system, evap system, all that jazz. just took out my ac too. in fact i think the motor is ready to be pulled. might get to it tonight, but i have a dinner to go to at six. after i get it out it should be another day till it goes in. i also just ordered this.

yeah i know its an innovate. some guys have had trouble with them. but the lc-1 it comes with is pretty popular. and yes i know its an analog. i like the look. this was the set i had my heart set on. i didnt plan on getting one, but after talking to the eurodyne dealer i bought it on a whim from thmotorsport for 200$ shipped. i like the analog look and will eventually change my vdo boost gauge to the g2 series gauge as well as pick up and oil pressure gauge too

Innovate sucks. My LC-1 took a dump on me after maybe 2 weeks installed (can't recall exactly how long)...brand new. Replaced it with a used AEM Uego, and could not be happier.

Also, I find it a wonder that your local Eurodyne tuner can't flash bench your ECU. Mine can. That is how I have my current tune, and how I will upgrade to the Suite (afaik).

Must be a LC1 issue, I have been running their LM1 for years without any issues.

I would call CTapp direct, tell him about your complications with this tuner, and maybe he can talk to him to straighten him out.

Looks awesome man, great work. I might have to steal that idea and shave mine, I could never stand how much crap was all over the valve cover for no apparent reason.

the tuner knows i want to have it bench flashed. i made it pretty clear to him that i dont want to trailer the car down there. he said he emailed ctapp and they will get back to him about my options. i asked him if he could just give me everything i could could flash it all myself, and he said ctapp wont let him do that. wtf?

I just think it's bullsh*t that he can't bench flash it. My tuner did it in front of his house first time I had my ECU flashed for the stock turbo (really cool guy). Second time (BT flash), did it parked on the sidewalk in front of his shop. I really don't get how he can't bench flash your ECU . Does he know the AWM is an ME7 and not ME5? Not to downplay him at all, but something just does not add up.

I know a guy who had his ECU held at the border for 6 weeks because it had "Meth" written on it. Not joking lol.
