Ok, so my waterpump is making noise....

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
....God damn it...when I first start the car you feel it rotating and can hear it...its not loud...but its there....I drove the car for 5 mins...went out...listened to it...seemed fine...

I am not losing coolant at this time...leads me to think it is the bearings....which is worse...but...how much do you think an independent mechanic would want to take out of my freaking pocket for a water pump job only on a 3.0 v6 2003? I live in NYC...

    Thanks

FWIW there's no such thing on these cars as a 'water pump job only'. It's timing belt, rollers, idlers, thermostat, water pump, etc..don't cut corners. It's gotten cheaper in the last couple years, but..unless you have a trick I'd expect something in the area of $750-$1200 on labor, $400-600 in parts. It all depends on how greedy they are. All joking aside, DO NOT take it to just anyone with the cheapest estimate. The 3.0 isn't super technical, but you SERIOUSLY want it done right the first time, and it's worth a couple hundred extra if that's what it costs to insure it's right.
How many miles on that H20 pump now? It's never been done before? It might be worth a decent / accurate diagnosis if it's not really old.

I have to ask, how can you tell its the water pump??

I mean when you start the engine the whole engine and all accessories are rotating. So what specifically makes you think the water pump? There are a LOT of moving parts...

Ok. Is the timing belt original too? IE has the full timing belt service ever been done?

Because if you haven't I would listen to rollerton's advice and do EVERYTHING. Don't cheap out or in 6 months time you'll be starting a thread "so my timing belt snapped, how much does a new engine cost???"

Sounds like its probably the WP then. If its the bearing failing I would take care of it asap. As when they finally fail from heat, they'll sieze up and shred the timing belt and your engine is toast.

Just a idea...Can also be a belt tensioner, best to use a stethoscope to locate noise

Is it easy to change this part ...do you need to remove the timing belt or to remove the front end?

Dude, real hard to tell from that, I do hear some P/S pump noise, sure its not that? These have common issues with hose sucking air by pump. By the tire in video it sounds like a exhaust leak..sorry don't mean to pick apart your ride.

Maybe best to have one of these places check it for you. http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...cal-repair-NYC

That's a joke, right? Who in the realm of sanity would tear down a 3.0 and NOT do the water pump? I refuse to believe it.
Anyone who would do that is your enemy, and it's a sad, sad, joke.

Question for this would be, why did the timing belt get changed and everything else, but they left the old water pump in place. Every timing belt kit I've seen comes with a new water pump, seems odd that they would replace everything except that.

mechanic's stethoscope from napa, worth every bit of $10 i paid for mine. if it is indeed the water pump take care of it asap because it WILL fail, when the bearing goes it can snap the tbelt and bang goes the engine.

A wise man once said: "Change all rotating parts that assocoate with Audi timing belts at once! This way they dont bite ya in the arse later on down the road! "

Water pump is driven by timing belt...water pump fails...often takes timing belt with it!

Dont skrimp on your Audi maintenance!
