Window tint + Auto dimming mirrors

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey guys, getting some window tint installed tomorrow and wanted some input regarding it affecting the auto dimming side Mirrors. Does this screw up the sensors? I can get 12%, 36% or 50% installed.

12% is for hoodlums and drug dealers.

My windows are tinted and I haven't noticed any issues with my mirrors. The mirrors dim (to my knowledge) when light hits them; regardless of the dimming, they are going to be a bit harder to see with tint anyway.

I'd do 36%; it's dark, but not too dark. Maybe even consider 50% on the two front windows and darker on the rears.

The only mirror tinting would have an effect on, would be the rear view mirror. Like Greedo stated, the side view mirrors dim when hit by light and thus would be unaffected by how dark your windows are.

I have 30% and the rear view mirror still dims when needed and works as intended.

That's not how it works. There's a sensor in the Rear View Mirror that tells all three mirrors to dim. I have 42% with the factory tint - so about 35% and the auto dimming works just fine.

Is that really how that works? My apologies then.

Makes even less sense as to why retrofitting the mirrors only is so expensive.

Well I am a pharmacist... Haha. I was thinking that combo though, figure with the black interior and ny laws might need to go a little lighter in front

My only piece of advice would be to get the same percentage all around. Looks are subjective but I always thought that mismatching tint between front and rear looks a bit 'off', especially if there's a big difference.

For reference I have 35% (I think) huper optic all around, and nothing on the windshield; and haven't had any trouble with the law in NY. During the day it lets in the right amount of light while still being dark enough. At night it is pretty dark.

I've got 35% on sides and back and have noticed that the mirrors do dim at night - and it's almost too dark to see anything in them. So, I usually turn the dimming feature off. The tint is dark enough to block any annoying headlights approaching from the rear.

I've got 50% (which is lighter than others already responded) and mine dim as they did when I had no tint.

I dont have the "anti-dazzle" feature or the auto dimming side views package but I do have the rear view that auto dims when but mine seems to turn dark when its dark outside not just when the light shines on it. I have 35% on the front windows and 20% on the rear and back window. Its a little dark and some times I need to roll down the passenger side window to make sure I don't curb the tires but its the best combo I cold come up with.

i have 30% all around and even with my rear shade up at night (i usually keep the sides and rear up all the time for the kids) the mirrors still dim perfectly....and the rear shade blocks out way more light than the tint. 30-35% is pretty standard for cars here in texas

Seems kind of bs to me, but that's the law.

I've got CS 50, which brings me down to around 40% VLT accounting for a little factory tinted glass. Mirrors dim as I expect.

    Cool website.

Yea, I've had 35 tint all around and I feel thats a good balance between not being too dark at night and looking good during the day.

Firstly, congratulations on being more intelligent than Audi !

I've had two B8's with dimming mirrors. One without factory tints and one with. The current one (with tints) dims the mirrors at a later (brighter) point due to the lower light reaching the sensor. For the internal mirrot it's fine but the outers are now later dimming.

I spoke to my deaker and they said speak to Customer Services. I did. They said get a technicians report from your dealer. So I did. Conclusion is the tinits have a negative effect on auto dimming mirrors .... but anyone outside of Audi could have sussed that!

Result : I got a refund on the option on dimming/electric folding mirrors :)

So there is an implication and it's up to you how dark you go and how big that effect is. I don't know what percentage of light the Audi tints let through so I can't assist on levels.
