    AC Compressor Rebuild?

Do we B6'ers have an option to rebuild our ac compressors? I've searched and found a few other forum posts using Google but it seems that people have replaced the o-rings around the clutch. I have a bad compressor and was looking into a possible rebuild as opposed to just dumping $445 for a new one. What do you guys think? Does a rebuild DIY exist or are the ones I found online regarding replacing the o-rings all I need? Where are the ac gurus?

How about good used compressor for $75 with a 90 day warranty? That's what I would do.

Show me where and I'll order it right now. The B6 compressors are hard to find for a reasonable price I've found.

The company that manufacturers the a/c compressors for our cars, Denso, has stopped "rebuilding" them and now only sells "new" ones!

However there are other companies that still rebuild and sell remanufactured compressors. Yes $445 is allot of money..however price one from the dealership! ;o)

Rebuilding one is a highly specialized skill, that requires extensive knowledge of the internals of the compressor, and what to look for once the compressor is disassembled! Let alone acquiring a "rebuild-kit" for the 5 different a/c compressors that could be on the B6 A4!

Once rebuilt you would need to pressure test the compressor...got a test bench? ;o)

MikTip, I've noticed that you posted the same response in Sam's thread. I saw his thread posted about 10 seconds after I posted mine. How do you add oil to the compressor? I guess I should probably call the stealership which diagnosed my ac and find out EXACTLY what they "found" during their diagnosis...

Oil is added like freon....through the low pressure port...
But ya got to 'know' what your doing as too much oil is not good either! ;o)

usually when the compressers go, they litterally explode. putting holes in the case. this was the case with my old B6 and also a lot of other members here. I ended up putting a used compressor in, and it worked fine for the 4 monthsafter before i sold it. new owner spun a rod beaing...so the cars no more.

Does anyone just have an ac compressor R&R DIY? I got on from FCP Euro for $190... Hopefully doesn't explode on me. Is this a difficult job? I keep reading about people saying to "oil" the compressor... I also have a new dryer and orifice tube and I'm just trying to take the right approach as far as doing this properly. I'm pretty sure that I can get the compressor installed without issues I'm just uncertain of the others, especially the oil in the compressor... Diagnosticator? OG?

The compressor is suppose to come with the required amount of oil inside already. With that said, mine did not. Bought from Europaparts. Let me dig through my bookmarks when I get home. I know I have the correct oil amounts saved some where. Also I didn't use the insane priced audi oil. Went with the same kind, spec, etc that was less than $20. Has been fine for over a year now.

I am about to refresh my AC system as well..New compressor, dryer, orfice, and oil. Is a flush really necessary if my existing compressor never exploded, rather I believe the clutch just went and wouldn't engage or possibly solenoid as I couldn't even get it to engage by jumping the Pressure switch.

Should I just install the new compressor and dryer/orfice then pull vaccum and add 180 ml of oil and the correct amount of R134a which is 21oz I believe?

Mine didn't explode either, more so the bearing for the pulley went. The pulley was wobbly but still turned by hand and the compressor still worked fine making cold air. But was screeching something fierce. I did a flush as it is usually require to keep your new compressor warranty valid. Had enough small metal grit come out to be glad that I did. Only saw a few tiny metal flakes on the orifice tube.
