Better gas will give you better gas milage, besides, if you love your car you wouldn't be wanting to fill it with cheap shit

    Exsqueeze me?

The 2.0t SHOULD get 20+ MPGs city. Close to 30 highway.

You really think putting regular in and saving <$2 is going to make having the car retard timing and generally run less efficiently than normal acceptable? You'll get marginally worse MPGs with regular than with premium.

You won't hurt anything, but long term use of crappy gas isn't good for the engine. Search, this topic comes up all the time. If you're going to cut corners don't do it at the gas pump.

If you had the 4.2 I could understand your MPG woes, but you've got a small, high efficiency, 4-cylinder turbo. If you are upset over the MPGs your car is returning your money is best spent on maintenance...

Seriously what 3 dollars more a tank?

Yes it will run FINE with 87, cheaper, and less power, but completely fine.

The money you save at the tank will be negated with crappier MPGs.

I know people who put shit gas in the 1.8T. Is it worth it though? However, The engine is made for 91 so that is what I would use.

Agreed .........I would say use 91 if it is available in your area and not to go to lower octane than that.

I wouldn't think of it as 'shit' gas, but rather gas that simply doesn't match what your engine expects to see. Nonetheless...as advised, don't do it. One other reason...burning the fuel less efficiently will ruin your catalytic converters more quickly. Bottom line...the $0.20/gal you save today just isn't worth it.

you will end up paying more to run the car on regular or midgrade (assuming it's less than 91 or so) than you do to run the car on premium. the cost difference between premium and regular is what, 2-4 dollars per tank? let me put it this way, our b6 on premium gets about 20-21 in the city, and 32ish on the highway. however, with midgrade it gets about 16 in the city, and 24 on the highway.

additionally, the car doesn't know what kind of fuel you are filling it with. all the car knows is whether it sees any knock or not. personally, i wouldn't want to be constantly bouncing up against the knock sensor, nothing good can come of that.

moral of the story, using a lower octane than what the car calls for will NOT save you money, but rather actually likely cost you more.

my car got filled with 87 once because here in nj idiots pump your gas. i didnt realize till it was 3/4 full. got noticeably worse mileage and the car just felt off.
the only way id go any lower on octane is when i install my vast meth kit then i might consider running 91.

    That's all you need!

We have 87, 89, & 93 around here. I wish we had 91. It would probably be a good 10 cents cheaper. It adds up after time. We're only tuned for 91 anyways.

91 is what they are built and tuned for. If it is cold, you can go lower though.

No less than 91 octane. Drive less or buy a different car. We knew the octane requirements when we purchased. If you think yours is bad, I have a 3.2L. Premium is only 7-10% more than 87 octane.

My experiences with 87 gas: I have a 2.0 T (B7) and a 1.8 T Jetta. I've tried 87 octane in both at various times. The 1.8 T seems to drive quite happily on 87, but I still put 91 or better in it because I think it's worth the small cost increase. The 2.0 T was very unhappy with 87. The engine seemed to "bog down" during acceleration and idle was very rough. I tried this with Shell and BP gas in Connecticut and I've stopped experimenting. It's just not worth the risk of having an unhappy engine, in my opinion.

on a basic average, premium to low gas the difference is about 30 cents, for a 16 gallon tank that adds up to a total of $4.80 if you fill up the ENTIRE tank....if you are sweating about swinging $5 every week or so then i would wager a guess that you have bigger problems in your life that need more attention at the moment

Seriously? I've considered doing something to get more power out of it but was afraid of the MPGs when doing the normal day2day crap like commuting. On the highway, during the summer, with 91 octane, I've been able to get 36mpg out of it on a pretty regular basis (going 80-85 and following minivans, pickups or larger, and probably closer than I should). How do you get better mpg with a stage 1? It is just that the boost doesn't kick in as soon, so you end up not using the turbo as much in city driving? Is the turbo lage worse?

(wrong thread, I know, but I've asked before and got zero responses)

the oem fueling on our cars is on the rich side, which essentially makes the car run a bit cooler, and is a little bit less stressful on the engine

a tune basically leans out the fueling, and brings up the boost, the upping of the boost does not really do anything for gas mileage, but the leaning of the fuel certainly does.
