I check under my hood at least once every two weeks. Ive had to repair a lot on this car in the -almost- 4 years I've had it so its become habit. this week, I see a pea-size hole in my under hood fuel supply line's rubber outer lining. the 'braided' line inside is still in tact, but I was FOR SURE leaking fuel. little drops, but definitely consistent. I know its not too close to the exhaust mani but regardless, I stopped driving and started researching. I found some Gates MPI fuel injection hose and i can pick up what i need for less than $20, including screw clamps specified for fuel injection. I have a few things I see going wrong with trying to replace it, though. First, lets get familiar with that we're talking about.

obviously referring to the rubber line running from the firewall to the fuel rail, just to the right of the valve cover.

    1. Am i going to be able to get those camps off the hard connection at the fuel rail? I called my dealer and he said its basically all one piece, the hose and the hard connector to the rail. I figure thats probably true and i didn't have my VIN at the time to get a specific part number for my car, and I know it's going to be $100 or so. I DONT want to cheap out on fixing my fuel system, don't get me wrong. I just want to do only whats necessary and eat(better) for the remainder of the week.

    2. Say I don't need an expensive part and the old hose comes off with somewhat ease, praise the audi gods. will I be okay with 'fuel injection hose clamps'? I read about this exact problem on 2.7Ts and they used clamps at the firewall line but didn't specify what they did at the rail. I'll update this post in a bit with a picture of my actual problem.

    thanks in advance

I mean, I understood how simple it could be. Its just a pretty vital component that I didn't want to mess up and leave myself stranded as this car has done 1 too many times before. but thanks

Fuel hose will cost you like $1.50 at an auto parts store. Just get the right size. My B5 uses 5/16" hose, but not sure about the B6 as I was told you guys have a smaller fuel feed. Also, use fuel line clamps and not worm clamps. They sell these at auto parts stores also.

thanks for the reassurement. Pretty sure 5/16ths is the closest size offered for the metric size on the existing hose

No problem. And here is a pic of the correct clamp to use. Also use a socket/racthet to tighten it down and thank me later!

There are special fuel hose clamps you can buy. They are not the typical worm-gear style clamp.

It's seriously just as straight-forward as it looks. Go buy some 5/16" (8mm) EFI fuel hose rated for at least 75 PSI, 2 fuel line clamps.....and go do it. Easy.

Isn't there some kind of braided slip-over cover you can buy for hoses?

Ya know, if one were so inclined...

eeeeeek. $13.46 at the auto parts store for 2 feet of line and a box of clamps. I need to get a dremel. it would make removing OEM clamps so much easier. once those were off it took about 2 minutes.

in case someone else comes across this problem and could use any tips, make sure you take out your fuel pump fuse and start your car over and over/drain the fuel rail via relief valve so the line isn't pressurized when removing it. thanks guys.

There is also a schreader valve on the back of the fuel rail you can drain off the fuel pressure at the rail/fuel line. Glad your up and running

I just had to replace this hose, and I did not do anything with the fuse or pressure relief valve. Put it all back together and the car won't start. Without pulling the fuse for the pump did I flood it or cause an air bubble I need to bleed out? How should I proceed?

Air could be present I'd guess. There's a valve (Just like the ones on your tires) at the back end of the fuel rail. This is what I'd try:

    1) Turn key on, engine off, for 3-5 seconds. This builds fuel pressure up at the rail.
    2) Depress schrader valve and have the gas drain into a cup or something.
    3) Repeat a few times. Try starting your engine.
