So question for you guru's and mechanics.

Do I replace it, drive it and keep going, or do I put the car back together and have it towed into audi to check into this. Im really not sure what to do.. called an audi dealer in Cali since in Texas they are closed and he suggested i tow it in but I would like your feedback.

    Im at 77,107 miles

If your under CPO bolt it back up and drive it to the dealer... If your are not warrantied then you need to replace the HPFP, Cam an CF...... Or you can put a new CF in and have EXCESSIVE wear on the new and then on CF's..

They should with your deductible offcourse.
I hate to say it but i would wait till dealer is open, check if you are under CPO and explain to them what happened.
I would honestly be shitless scared to put that back in and turn on the car even lol.

Talk to the dealer and ask them wtf

i have another cam follower, I was going to replace it if it wasn't that bad.

So what im not sure if I should replace it with the new one, drive it back to Houston and then go to a dealer Monday or if I should have it towed back to Houston. I'm in Byran which is about 65 miles from where I live.

Tow it back if you can swing it money wise unless you have AAA...

Audi extended the warranty on the cam followers, intake camshafts, and the high pressure fuel pump to like 10 years/120K miles. So I would bolt it back up and take it to the dealership. Tell them that you took the high pressure pump off to check the camshaft follower and noticed it was badly damaged. See if you can get them to replace the cam follower, intake camshaft, and high pressure fuel pump. I see that you have a tune but I don't think the scan tool and pick that up on your car yet for the TD1 label.

But I'm sure there are better ways of screwing over the dealers earned money..

I would set things back to stock as much as possible, including tune, and then tow it back to the dealer for a warranty repair. The worst being you spent the money on towing for them to tell you it's not covered. The best being thy cover towing and replace most everything

Looks just like my first one did. This is what you need to do, put it back in the car, make an appointment with the dealer. Tell the service adviser that you have been experiencing some hesitation while driving, that you would like for them to check the cam follower. They will tell you that with no codes they can't do anything blah blah blah. Tell them specifically that you would like for them to check the cam follower, if it turns out that its fine, then you will pay the hours labor to have them replace it.

They will take it off, find it trashed, your HPFP lobe is worn, and it will all be covered under the 120k extended warranty. Your HPFP looks identical to how mine did, if you look up the TSB it categorically states that when the follower is worn through, that they must replace HPFP, camshaft and follower etc.

If they try to give you crap about the tune, point out to them that if it was the tune that caused it, then how come Audi issued an extended warranty and there are thousands of documented owners with stock engines experiencing the same problem.

You will be fine driving it like that. I was probably driving for at least a month on my cam follower like that with no issues, and I was beating on it trying to get a CEL to come on. Who knows how long I was driving it before I even discovered it punched through.

mine was a little worse than yours. audi ended up replacing the pump, cam, lifter, and follower along with all gaskets etc. thank you baby jesus for having been a CPO! $1600 covered fo $free.99

im 95% sure its covered up to 110,000 miles. but you need a "symptom" or CEL. i luckily work for a company that owns an audi dealer so im pretty sure they just made up a symptom for me, since i discovered the wear myself when i inspected it. converstation went like this:

Me: (emailed pictures) I inspected my cam follower for wear and found this. There is no tension left on the pump either..can this be covered under the extended warranty on the cam followers? i replaced the follower already.

Audi service: since you replaced the cam follower already we cant do anything.

Me: .....what if i put the old one back in?....

Audi Service: Thats probably a good idea, i would get it towed up here.

    Me: Done.

hahah i was shocked they said that...but hey, cant complain!!

wow you must have worn completely through the follower for some time. look how worn down the fuel pump piston is. if you're still covered best bet is to have Audi replace the follower, pump, and possible camshaft as well.

It doesn't have to be CPO, audi extended the warranty for this issue up to 120k miles. So you can either get it towed to audi or put everything back and drive it there since all cam, follower and hpfp need replacing. I'm not sure if audi covers the towing with this extended warranty.
If you're still CPO they will pay for towing but you have to make sure you call audi of america and get the towing through them not through you audi dealership. I made this mistake and I had to pay for towing.

Now there's another big issue you need to take care of, the missing piece of the follower. It should be around the cam chain tensioner and it can do some damage if not removed. It's possible some damage was already done.

I had the same problem a few years ago. They most likely won't look at it if there's no CEL, but you can do what I did. I told them I want it checked for the piece of mind and pay for the labor. When they will see it they won't charge you anything, Audi will cover everything. So they cannot say no. Read this my thread for more details.

OP, don't tell them that, don't give them reasons to void your warranty cause an unauthorized person worked on the car.
    See my post above.

I put in the new follower. It threw a cell a while back but honestly, I never checked it because it's thrown a few cels at me before after the tune. I should have checked it.

So partially my fault, BUT! it shouldn't have worn through regardless. I'm going to drive it home make an appointment, and just show them the freaking hole in the follower. I was told to talk to a specific person at the dealer im going as he is more mod friendly.

    So i'll update this Tomorrow.

I'm sure this has been said already, but if its not under warranty chances are you will need a new cam, follower, and fuel pump as all will be quite damaged.

was it still running like that? Were you just doing routine maintenance and that's what it looked like? The last three i've replaced on cars had basically no real signs of wear but i figured better safe than sorry. Also i thought all cars were covered not just CPO?

^ yup, just routine maintenance on the car. I was changing the timing belt, water pump, thermostat, oil, cam follower, brake light fix (bulb was out) filters, etc. So just normal things, the car isn't going to be driven much anymore so just wanted to take care of the essentials coming up.

    Called all three dealers.

    Audi West
    Momentium Audi
    And Sewell Audi

Audi West and Momentium didn't act like the knew what I was talking about, or that they cared. Sewell Audi (yet again) knew what I was talking about and said tomorrow morning. I asked if it was possible to get this looked into today, he said "my loaners will be back in around 5, if you want to come then, that's fine" so he not only gave me the options but knew what I was referring to.

So it's getting dropped off in a couple hours.

so this took place after a new follower was installed and *only* having a stage I tune? did you have an upgraded HPFP or internals?
just wondering aloud on why this happened @ this point and if the lobe and pump were already damaged before the new follower was installed.

good luck, man. hope it turns out OK.

No, this was the original cam follower in the car, replaced it at 77k miles only.
So the original has a hole. i replaced it so I could drive home. The plunger of the HPFP is damaged with an angle on it, I didn't get a chance to look at the cam, but I imagine it's scared a little.

Update: They are going to overnight the parts and have it fixed by late tomorrow, so i'll get my car back Thursday afternoon.

They also said I was throwing a code for an evap line, so i need to look in to that.

How exactly was it driving? Mine is going into the dealer tomorrow.

Car won't accelerate past 2000 rpm. Surges and stuff. Runs normal under 2000 rpm. Throwing check engine lights when I try to accelerate past 2000. Dealer told me I can drive it until it flashes. Said sounds like PCV and maybe follower.

Were you able to accelerate? Or did you just feel like checking your follower?
