Upgrade to 2014 S5 or No?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Decisions, decisions....

Audi sales has been calling me often as of late offering to buy back my S4 saying they are extremely interested in it. They really "want" to get me into a new vehicle(of course).

I explained that there is no desire for me to upgrade to a car in which I percieve to be essentially identical, albeit with a less appealing front end.

I explained that the only way I would consider trading in was if it was for an S5, as it is slightly different look and "new". This and I actually like the face lifted look of the S5 as opposed to the old S5.

I have currently made exactly half my financed payments on my S4. I am going in Saturday to sit down with the sales manager and see what they can do. I really do not want to start an entire 48 months of payments again, but would be willing to accept 36 months. I also would not pay more monthly than I do now, as this was my first new and financed vehicle I am paying a decent amount monthly.

I am hoping to be able to get a good deal but not sure how much room there is to negotiate, any experts out there with tips?

    What do you think?

Stick with current S4 until the B9's come out? Heard there were delays which may make upgrading to 2014 S5 more attractive.

Upgrade to S5 and transfer what mods I can to the car, sell the rest, and enjoy the new case smell and feel?

I'll be honest, I thought this to. My current lifestyle however does not require the extra pair of doors. I have used my back seat a total of 3-4 worth while trips over the course of owner ship.

mod transfer will cost a lot.

If you know you'll get a b9, it really is a toss up. I would probably do it, if the payments are the same. I don't know how plausible that is..

What numbers are we talking about here. Shouldn't be too difficult to figure out if your required payment is achievable.

Its nice to have a newer car, but is one needed in your life right now? Also make sure you check with your insurance and see how much of an increase it is for the s5. My brother had an s5 and it was way more than my s4. He even priced the s4 with his insurance and it was a lot lower. Something about the s5 increases insurance a lot.

I suspect your mods will kill you on trade in value + higher price of S5 + cost of mod transfers / new mods for the S5 = I think stick with S4 that will be paid off in a couple of years.

Dealers always say they want your trade to get you back in the showroom and get you hooked on a new car. I suggest asking them for a ballpark trade in value before getting too intoxicated by a new car. Did they know all the mods it has when they said they were extremely interested in the car?

They are just trying to move another car. Probably won't be any "deal" but once they have you in their office its tough to walk if you like the new car. I had 4 doors for many years (2 kids) and went coupe for 3 years and it was great. Rarely have people in back seat and sometimes it really convenient to say "sorry i don't have room". I want an S5.

Given that you are already a DSG owner then its a no brainer, wait for the B9. Enjoy the fact that you can open your doors far no matter where you park.

IDK man, yours is a more mild case than the guy who wants to trade into a BMW M1. The S5 is sexy (and I have also considered this switch), but I don't think it's worth it for you (unless there was something like you REALLY want to get into a 6MT). Too much money put into mods that will yield little to no equity, plus you'll need to uninstall the headers, right? And then re-install them in S5 lol. It's not like a lease, so there aren't enough variables that the dealership can play with to "make it work" for you. Just calculate how much equity you have (add maybe 2k to the offer they give you) and then assume you can knock off maybe 1-2k from whatever they are asking (assuming you want CPO 2013/2014 S5 with little to no miles?). Plus you will pay the TOTAL tax in MI, there is no deduction based on your trade in (so you are paying an extra 2-3 grand)...

You have a car that is one of the fastest on the board not to mention the meth setup. I think this is just a case of "no more serious go fast mods left"...I think you should either wait for B9 RS5 or just get a new"ish" B8.5 RS5 and throw an APR supercharger on it. Hopefully you could get enough for your mods to cover that APR blower...only thing you need to move to RS is prob the AK, maybe the sways and links but maybe not.

Edit - I wonder if GIAC would allow you to move your setup over to the S5. Else you would lose 3k for original stg2 + DSG and then have to pay it ALL OVER again...that would really suck.

It's funny because all the B8 guys say "don't do it, it's the same car" and all the B8.5 guys say "do it, you'll love the little differences". Does the B8 front end look like the B8.5? No, it's different. No much different but it's different. I'd say if your payments are the same, do it all day, then get a B9 when it comes out. Have exactly what you want.

Hahaha I love the honest responses, very humbling.

Quick tip, I have a shop that I am close to the owner with. I would drop off all my stock parts and have them swapped for the OEM stuff. The parts would then be able to stay at the shop, IF I get the S5 I would transfer what I would, sell the rest.

I already informed them the car would be returned to 99% stock. They will be doing appraisal Saturday.

I will let you guys know what they say after I visit Saturday.

Drob, I think you may be right, I am just getting the itch, I've already gone fast, now I just want fast and new haha.

I'll let you all know what "deal" they try to give me.

The tune will have to be replaced and your car is effectively TD1'd so that's something to consider.

They have a new sales guy - cold calling through a list of B8 owners... same pitch to each one... they probably have exhausted their leased contact list and now going after owners...

Unless you have been wanting an S5 and don't mind paying more for one and taking a loss on your investment in mods then why bother?! I buy a car on my terms when I want to and when it's a car I'm in love with... not because I got cold called and offered a deal - plus you'll get more for your 12' in a private sale anyways...

I would NEVER want an S5 with the 4.2 V8. Had similar on my B6 S4. It was a gas guzzling nothing special engine. 3.0 Sc engine is far superior.

Only good thing about the S5 is the offset wheels you can run on them. That's about it. Personally, I'm waiting to see what the next motor is in the B9, but we all have our priorities. If you have an S4 now, moving to an S5 seems a bit weak of a decision... not enough gain. An RS5 would be about the only option I'd consider, but it doesn't have an engine that appeals to me, hence waiting on the B9. I like FI, not NA.

Be interesting to know the deal. Seems unlikely to be able to to go from a 2012 S4 to a 2014 S5 while maintaining the same payments and only adding 1 year to your term.
