Fuel Rail Pressure Regulator Valve Install/Replacement

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
For everyone running stage 2 and above tunes, it is recommended you upgrade this part.

If you have a 2005-2006 you have a 116 bar valve.
If you have a 2007-2008 you have a 126 bar valve.
Either way you will most likely have to replace this part because tunes above stage 2 usually require more pressure than what Audi had intended.

To date, the only options are:
    1. Buy the rs4 Pressure Regulator Valve(PRV) though this is not optimal for our cars.
    2. Contact HPFPupgrade.com and buy one of their valves. It is recommended to buy a valve that is 10 bar above what you plan to run.

Neither Audizine nor I take responsibility for any damages you may cause while working on your car. This DIY is a reference only, Audizine and any of it's members are not liable. DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK.

    Tools needed:
    14mm crows foot
    17mm crows foot
    12" 3/8's bar extension
    3/8s ratchet
    Philips and flathead screwdriver
    17mm wrench
Torx 25 on a screwdriver or ratchet.

1.Before you start working on the fuel system, reduce the pressure by removing the fuel pump fuze. Turn your engine on and wait for the fuel pressure to go down and your car will stop running. Now we can dive in.
Shot from the left of the steering wheel

    2. Disconnect the harness that plugs into the bottom of your coolant tank. Remove the philps screw holding your coolant tank. Pull the front end up and toward you to pull it out of its position. Set it aside for now, we will need this space to access the PRV from the side.
    Shot from above the engine

    3. Disconnect your PCV system or catch can. Since I had rerouted my 034 Catch can hoses, I was able to just remove the rear hose to access the PRV. If you have the PCV system as opposed to the catch can then you will indeed have to remove both hoses.
    Shot from above the engine

Now we can see that the PRV is below the intake manifold.
    Shot from above the engine

    4. Remove the two t-25 screws that attach to the hard fuel line on top of the intake manifold.
    Shot from above the engine

    5. Remove the screw attaching the two hard lines under the intake manifold and is next to the n80. Move the bracket that holds these two screws to the side or take it off completely. Now you have removed these three screws, you can proceed to the next step. The screw you remove in this lower picture holds the bracket that you need to push out of the way.
Shot from the right side of the engine

    6. You may want to put glasses on or be careful, there is a chance that you may get sprayed with fuel. Attach your 14mm crows foot to the 12" bar on the 3/8 ratchet and break the hard fuel line free from the PRV, continue to turn the hard fuel line nut until it is entirely off of the PRV. Once it is off, slightly push it off, since you have removed the three screws, it should be easy to put it out of the way so the PRV can be brought out.
Shot from the right side of the engine

    7. Attach the 17mm crows foot to the 12" bar on the 3/8 ratchet and break free the PRV from the engine. If your crows foot is not too wide you may be able to twist it off all the way using the crows foot. In my situation, my crows foot was too wide and so I broke it loose using the crows foot, then used a 17mm wrench on the PRV to remove it all the way.
Shot from the right of the engine.
If the crows foot doesn't work then use the 17mm wrench.
    Shot from above the engine.
    8. Put in your new PRV and reassemble everything in reverse order. Don't forget the coolant tank sensor!

Feel free to PM with any questions.

Nice job Martin! I will add that Seth and I needed to loosen the fuel rail from the hpfp also in order to get more movement. Maybe not necessary, but it helped us.

Don't forget the valve is Brass, which ISN'T magnetic! So don't drop it somewhere you'll regret! Haha. I dropped the shitty one I took off into a black hole and never saw it again. Lol. Would suck if that was the new one.

    Ty for the DIY!

Just a note: my FRP_HIGH is maxed to 115.9. Now and then I see it jump up to 120.9 for a very brief moment. But still it seems I just got a 116 bar valve in my Euro A4 manufactured in April 2007.

No unfortunately it is not! This is a fuel pressure regulating valve. So basically fuel goes into the hpfp through to the fuel rail and injectors, not all is used. So the high pressure needs an escape. through the PRV! the low pressure fuel sensor is probably in the intake fuel pump. PM jimrobbington, he is in this thread, that guy knows all about low side pressure.

I wish I would have looked closer when I was looking for this DIY earlier. I didn't see this until after I had finished my install. I took pictures and everything to write up my own DIY only to find out that Martin beat me to it by over a year. I did it slightly differently though. I did mine while installing my HPFPupgrade HPFP and a new N80 valve. I took the throttle body off to get a bit more clearance down there.

Is there a chance that a failure in this item may be causing my current fuelling woes? I seem to be suffering from a sudden loss of fuel pressure on the HP side despite just having the cam, follower and HPFP replaced. I've also just replaced some LP side items too including the fuel filter and LP pump. The logs in my thread below show the HP pressure reaching up to 128 bar before suddenly dropping into single figures.

I'm currently tuned with Apr stage 2+. Plan on possibly switching to jhm stage 2 if it proves to be a better tune. Then plan on upgrading to a k04. Is there a prv that would be recommended that should cover all three of these? The 145? Or should I just stay stock until I get the k04?

Stay stock prv for a jhm tune. Someone had a 145bar prv and had issues with it. If I remember right, when they let off the throttle rail pressure would spike and since the valve didn't crack, the ecu thought there was an over pressure situation and jhm safe guards kicked in.

That was me! My REVO 2+ didn't seem to mind at all when my rail pressure would hold 140 bar, but with JHM, as soon as I let off the gas and the rail pressure built, if I was high enough in the rpms, it would go limp.

Stay stock prv until you go BT. I have my 145 bar prv for sale on the cheap though if you want to pick it up for future use at a good deal.

Thanks guys. I'll wait it out on stock for now since I don't plan on going any bigger than around a k04 since I highly doubt this car will ever see over 90mph.

We work with JHM on a few items, I am sure we could get a tune made for those wanting to run a 145 BAR rail valve.

The valve should still open at 145 BAR and the fail safes should be set higher than that even in the factory tune. Not 100% sure, so I will let JHM answer that for you.

    Thanks,

    John

Hopefully you guys can give me some insight into how on God's green earth you got the valve out.

I just got mine today from HPFP Upgrade, followed every step of the DIY. Got the 14mm fuel line off, was able to loosen the 17mm... Then couldn't loosen it any more. Crow's foot is to big, Craftsman 17mm wrench is to big.

Is there a special angle to use the 17mm wrench?

Any insight you can shoot my way will be beyond extremely grateful...

I modified my crows foot - put it on my bench grinder and shaved the sides down. That gave me the clearance I needed to get the 17mm off and back on again.

    Thank you very much...

A cordless Dremel, five separate recharging sessions, one grinding bit and a heavily modified 17mm crows foot later, the install is done and it fixed the problem I was having.

Yeah, i have crows feet that are angled, with one fat side and one skinny side . So i have to do a 1/8 turn, flip the crows foot, repeat. Big fat round crows feet won't work on this one.

Pretty sure they stopped making the 116 bar valve completely. Any new valve I would have to assume is 126.

Would you be able to get a ratchet spanner on the prv once the fuel line is off, instead of the crows foot?

Guys, where can you buy this upgraded part standalone? I am going APR Stage 2 very soon and would like to change my stock part with this while I am doing my next cam follower service

Edit; just called HPFPupgrade.com....Is it possible that this little thing is $110-180 + shipping??

Any help on this mec or others?

Basically, according to JHM, "06D130757C" is the 116 bar unit one (they sell it for like $60) but the 126 bar unit is actually from the B7 RS4 and it is $120?

Does that sound right to anybody? Mec seems to be saying about that B7 A4s 2007+ had 126 bar units....

    Early A4 was the 115bar , late a4 was the 126 bar. RS4 is 136 bar

Thanks for confirming Jake. Got a slightly different answer from a member of your sales team but that doesn't matter

What matters is, do you have a link to the 126 bar one that I can buy from you guys? Will place the order day, just need link and confirmation that it is 126 bar unit.

    Thanks again Jake!
