Lightbulb questions you thought were too dumb to ask

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
i've been seeing more and more posts around here telling people to search when they ask questions. well, in response to that, i'm starting a type of thread that existed in every section of saabcentral back when i regularly read and posted there. the whole thread is dedicated to questions about your B6 you simply thought were too dumb to ask. so here is the place to feel free to ask anything you want about your car. there is no question too dumb. well...within good limits. we don't need questions like "how do i start the engine?" if you read on here and see a question you know the answer to, go ahead and answer it, even if that means posting a link to another thread. sometimes searching just doesn't pull up information that really offers good answers, and straight up asking someone else ends up being better in the long run. may it be a wealth of information for us all.

    i'll start with an opener:

it's one i've searched for both here and with google. is there any way to remove slack from the hood release cable? mine's just barely pulling enough to pop the hood, and i'm concerned it'll cease to work altogether.

Interesting question. Here's a potential cure. Fabricate a ¼" spacer to insert between the end of the outer cable housing and the outer cable housing bracket under the hood. This will reduce the handle pull by ¼". If you need more just make a longer spacer.

Good idea. The spacer would probably work well.

    I have one,
The lock/handle latch for the rear seat folding mechanism seems to be broken or stuck. So I cannot fold down that section of the seat. The handle moves freely as if the seat were unlocked and when i lock it then the handle locks up like it should. How does that latch mechanism work so I can get the seat folded down and replace it?

    Thanks

Get some radio removal tools and remove the radio so you can remove the ash tray. You will probably find some coins or other trash has fallen behind the ash tray door preventing it from closing enough to latch.

Try silicone spray on the closing/opening mechanism. Or do like me, and hold off forever on picking up a used one for cheap and swapping it in. This post actually just gave me incentive to source a cheap one. Thanks!

The rear seatback latches work ~the same way as the door latches. The latch pin must be adjusted so that the pin is 90 degrees straight into the latch, and not to far in or out in relation to the seat latch, otherwise the latch will jamb or fail to latch and release correctly. It's all about the adjustment position of the latch pin screwed into the body, for fore and aft, up and down, and in and out with relation to the seat latch.

I thought that the end of the cable fit through a pin with a set screw at the hood latch, and the slack in the cable is pulled tight then the set screw tightened. Is the installed length of the cable fixed?

why do these cars have 4 wheels? a tri-mobile would have been much less costly and far superior in handling. 4 wheels is overkill. is it because of some sort of safety regulation?

The easier way is to hold the latch in the open position and give the seat a nice hit with your shoulder. I read that somewhere on here a few years ago and it also works on my stuck rear seats.

I just replaced that little latch assembly for the same reason. Upon closer examination I found that the plastic handle itself was broken and was flexing enough to feel like it was working, but in fact was not engaging the mechanism below. Unfortunately the handle isn't sold separately...

I understand why they have 4 wheels but I think 3 wheel drive would have been good enough

Pull the radio first and you'll have access to the screws holding it in. (I believe)

Correct (except there are no screws). Remove the stereo head unit using the stereo release keys. Slide the unit forward and disconnect the wiring.

Reach through the opening and push the climate control unit out from behind. It should just click out.

No. Lots of harm. You need way more fuel in order to have the correct air/fuel mixture. Running it without a proper tune (and larger injectors for enough fuel) will cause the engine to run super lean.

Head studs (ARP for example) can be re-used multiple times, and are much stronger than the OEM bolts. They also make lining up the head onto the block a lot easier.

I would connect the downpipe to the trans. Thats a lot of weight hanging on the flex pipe/test pipe/flanges/turbo/exhaust manifold. Somethings going to give eventually.

How does the window-lock switch work? It can be up or down, but then sometimes the light is on and sometimes it isn't...and I swear every time someone in the back tries their window it's locked.

Eliminator is a term coined by ATP for a Garrett GT25/GT28/GT30 series turbo designed by them to bolt up to the stock K03/K04-type exhaust manifold. There are the GT2X (GT25R-based), GTRS (GT2860), GT2871R (a GT28 w/71R compressor) and a GT3071R-based eliminator as well.

Frankenturbo is a K04 "hybrid" turbo (basically a K04-015 with a different/larger compressor wheel) which is a stock replacement as well, good for up to 300chp or so.
