Production flaw maybe.
Very cool. Because I'm no body expert: Maybe? Depends on how bad your rust is. I'd peg that pipe at ~3/16"s (max) thickness, so I'm sure it would take awhile for rust to penetrate the other side and it leaves you plenty of material to clean/protect.

The (normally) orange reflector in the North American front bumpers. Painted in the first two photos and shaved in mine. The NA spec sedan also has a red one in the rear bumper

I just removed mine from my 3.2 and they seem to be just as messy:

They are gong off for some cleaning and matching tomorrow.

Noob question: Is there a way to test the health of the fuel injectors and cleaning them at home with DIY tools? Instead of sending them in.

If you have VCDS you can check for injector errors, you can also check they flow when they have been removed but there is no real way to check they operate within specification without professional equipment that checks pulse rate response, flow rate and pattern. You can clean them with injector cleaner by soaking the tips and brush with a soft tooth brush but avoid contact on the ceramic seal unless you are going to replace them but again you need the special tool for that although there is some work arounds to install new seals.

I did the toothbrush method when I did a carbon clean, but wasn't sure if it was enough to fully clean the injectors.

Current goal is to maximize fuel efficiency.
